Stone's Big Plays Lead to IHCC Revenge

Ottumwa, IA -- Sophomore guard Larry Stone made a series of clutch plays and big shots over the final two-and-a-half minutes to allow Indian Hills to avenge an earlier loss and defeat Mineral Area College, 52-49, at the Hellyer Center on Wednesday night in the final game of the Courtside Bar & Grill Classic.

Stone's three-pointer with 2:10 left to play gave the Warriors a lead they wouldn't relinquish. That trey made it 48-46. Stone then dove on a loose ball and called timeout to save the possession for the Warriors. A pair of free throws by the Indianapolis, Indiana native put the Warriors ahead 50-46 with 1:26 remaining.

After Mineral Area made three free throws in the final 62 seconds to shave the IHCC lead to one point, it was Stone who, fittingly enough, drained two more free throws with 6.1 seconds left to provide the final margin.

Stone ended the night with a game-high 12 points and five steals for the Warriors, who had dropped a double-overtime decision at Mineral Area last month.

The rematch was close throughout. The largest lead was a six-point advantage for Mineral Area following an 11-1 run in the first half. Indian Hills led briefly at 12-11 after an E.J. Hicks free throw, but Carlton Guyton put the Cardinals back on top with a three and MAC kept the lead the rest of the half. Guyton's three right before the first-half buzzer sent the Cards off at halftime up by four points.

Chano Rashiduddin scored three straight field goals for the Warriors to start the second half, the last of which tied the game at 26. There would be four more ties and four lead changes after that.

IHCC's Dijon Farr completed a three-point play to give the Warriors their largest lead at 41-36 with 6:20 to play. Al Rapier put MAC on top, 46-45, with a free throw with 2:40 left before Stone's late-game heroics allowed the Warriors to come from behind and win their 14th game of the year.

The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for Mineral Area. Their leading scorers, Guyton and Martell Anderson, each had 10 points.

The Warriors will make it three games in as many days when they host Western Nebraska on Thursday at 5:00. WNCC has split two games so far on their trip to Ottumwa, losing 81-77 to Mineral Area before pounding Olive-Harvey, 85-50, on Wednesday night.

Warriors Take a Break after 12th Win

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills basketball team got back on the winning track, picking up its 12th win of the season on Wednesday night, a 63-57 victory over Southwestern CC. But the win didn't come without some anxiety as the Warriors saw a 16-point second-half lead cut to four in the final minute. A pair of free throws by Dwan McMillan in the last 60 seconds nailed down IHCC's 11th win without a loss on their home court.

Dijon Farr got the first Indian Hills points with a three-point basket over four minutes into the game. Farr's second three gave the Warriors the lead for good and started a 15-0 run that ended with a three-pointer by Larry Stone. At that point, the Warriors led 19-6 with just over eight minutes to go in the half.

Farr had 10 of the first 12 points for Indian Hills.

Southwestern got to within three points at 21-18 before IHCC ended the opening half on a 10-2 run. McMillan came up big for the Warriors in that stretch with three steals, a layup, and a pass to Brandon Garrett for a dunk. McMillan's pair of free throws with 23.3 seconds to go in the half made it an 11-point game at the break.

Indian Hills eventually opened up a 16-point lead in the second half, but had trouble closing out the visiting Spartans. Farr made both ends of a one-and-one with four minutes left, his only points of the second half, to give Indian Hills a 57-44 advantage.

Southwestern then outscored IHCC 13-4 until McMillan's two late free throws sealed the victory and sent the Warriors off to the Christmas break with a 12-4 record.

Trent Fisher scored 12 points in the second half for Southwestern and led all scorers with 14. Stone paced Indian Hills with 13, Farr wound up with 12 and McMillan scored 10 and added five steals.

Indian Hills is idle until they play three games in three days at the end of the month. The stretch starts with a home contest against Olive-Harvey on Dec. 29.

Henderson's Heroics Lift Penn Valley to OT Win Over IHCC

Marshalltown, IA -- Indian Hills let a 12-point lead slip away in the final five minutes of the second half and Penn Valley completed the comeback with a 76-71 overtime win over the Warriors in the Emerson JUCO Challenge on Sunday night.

Penn Valley's Justin Henderson got his team into overtime by making three straight free throws after he was fouled on a three-point try with 7.6 seconds left in regulation. Henderson then put the finishing touches on a 36-point effort by drilling a long three-pointer to start the scoring in overtime and adding a foul-line jumper after the Warriors had cut the PV lead to one.

That basket by IHCC's Larry Stone that made the score 71-70 was the only field goal the Warriors could muster in the five-minute overtime. Their only other point was a free throw by Stone with 31.9 seconds to play.

The free throw by Stone put the score at 73-71. Penn Valley hit a free throw and then got a steal and clinching layup in the final seconds as the Warriors saw a six-game winning streak come to an end.

Penn Valley's comeback from a 61-49 deficit with around four minutes to play was helped greatly by poor free throw shooting by the Warriors. Indian Hills was 4-for-8 at the foul line in the final minute of regulation and made only 20 of 37 at the line for the game.

Both teams struggled to find any consistency in the first half. Indian Hills was able to put together a 10-2 run late in the half and took a five-point halftime lead.

Indian Hills and Penn Valley traded the lead near the midpoint of the second half before a 19-7 run gave the Warriors a 12-point cushion. Dijon Farr had eight of his team-high 14 points for IHCC in that stretch.

Five points by Nathan Taylor helped PV come back from the 12-point deficit. With the Warriors leading 66-65 after a Penn Valley basket by Anthony May, his only points of the game, with under a minute to play, Aaron Austin hit one of two free throws to make it a two-point game.

Penn Valley missed a three-pointer that would have given them the lead and Dwan McMillan rebounded for the Warriors and was fouled. But the sophomore made only one of two free throws with 12.9 seconds remaining to leave the door open for Penn Valley to tie the game on Henderson's three foul shots.

Indian Hills reaches the midway mark of the regular season with an 11-4 record. The Warriors have one more game before Christmas, a home contest against Southwestern CC on Wednesday night.

Austin Carries Warriors Past Flyers

Marshalltown, IA -- A superb second half by Indian Hills sophomore guard Aaron Austin allowed the Warriors to overcome the one-two punch of Junior McLeod and Melvin Tillman and defeat New Creations Basketball Academy, 89-75, in the Emerson JUCO Challenge Saturday night in Marshalltown.

In one stretch in the second half, Austin scored 17 of IHCC's 23 points and assisted on two other field goals in that span as the Warriors were finally able to subdue New Creations, a team Indian Hills had defeated by 43 points just 10 days earlier.

Austin started his spree with a layup to put IHCC ahead 53-45. By the time he was finished, the Warriors had the same eight-point lead, 74-66, with five minutes remaining. The advantage then grew to double digits with the 14-point final margin the largest of the night.

New Creations repeatedly went inside to the 6-foot-8-inch McLeod and he responded with a team-high 22 points. Tillman hit four straight three-pointers in the second half and scored 21.

His last three with 8 1/2 minutes to play cut the IHCC lead to two points. Austin answered with a three-point play, then scored four more points and fed Brandon Garrett for a layup to help the Warriors pull away.

The game was tied four times in the first half after an early eight-point IHCC lead. Chano Rashiduddin scored the Warriors' final three points of the half to allow Indian Hills to take a four-point lead at the break.

But IHCC had trouble shaking the Flyers until the final minutes despite Austin's season-high scoring output. Indian Hills helped its cause by making 21 of 28 free throws.

Indian Hills (11-3) will take a six-game winning streak into Sunday night's game with Penn Valley, the final contest in the tourney.

Ottumwa -- NIACC came to the Hellyer Student Life Center on Thursday night with an undefeated record, a No. 7 national ranking in the NJCAA Division II poll and an offensive average of over 96 points a game. They left with their first loss of the season and their lowest point total of the year.

Indian Hills (10-3) sprinted out to a 28-point halftime lead and cruised to a 109-70 win. It was the fifth straight victory for IHCC, their second five-game win streak of the season.

By the half, Indian Hills was only four points below their season scoring average of 72 points a game. And the Warriors continued to widen the lead in the final 20 minutes. The largest lead was 45 points at 89-44.

IHCC's scoring was led by freshmen Brandon Garrett and Dijon Farr who both eclipsed their previous best scoring night. Garrett had 22 points and showed his versatility with four rim-shaking dunks and a late three-point basket. He also made all five of his free-throw attempts. Farr scored 21 points.

Garrett's first slam gave the Warriors their first double-digit lead at 16-6. Later in the half, Garrett and Farr threw down dunks on successive possessions as the lead grew to 54-35.

Indian Hills ended their huge first half with a three-pointer by Larry Stone, who added 11 points, and a pair of free throws by Dwan McMillan, who just missed double figures with nine.

Garrett's three-pointer put IHCC over the century mark for the second time in the last four games.

NIACC was led by DeAaron Hearn with 12 points.

It was the first time the two teams had met in basketball since the 1992-93 season.

The Warriors head to Marshalltown this weekend for two games in the Emerson JUCO Challenge, hosted by Marshalltown CC. Indian Hills will meet New Creations on Saturday night at 8:00 and will take on Penn Valley Sunday night at 6.

Second-Half Turnaround Lifts IHCC to Win

Ottumwa -- For the better part of 29 minutes, it looked like Kirkwood would gain a season sweep over Indian Hills. Then, the Warriors slumbering offense awoke and the better execution on the offensive end of the floor combined with a tenacious defense enabled the Warriors to come from behind for a 61-48 victory in the Hy-Vee Classic on Saturday night at the Hellyer Center.

Kirkwood had knocked off the Warriors, 66-55, last month in Cedar Rapids. Nine minutes into the second half of the rematch, the Eagles had a 39-35 lead and Indian Hills had made only two field goals after intermission.

Dijon Farr ignited the IHCC comeback with a fastbreak layup to make it a two-point game. Aaron Austin's two free throws tied the game for Indian Hills with just under 11 minutes to play.

Brian Wilson then gave the Warriors their first lead of the night when he scored on a short-range hook shot. From there, Indian Hills was off and running, outscoring Kirkwood 20-9 over the final nine minutes to win, 61-48.

The Warriors outscored Kirkwood 33-17 in the second half as IHCC improved their season record to 9-and-3 with their fourth win in a row.

After Wilson's field goal put the Warriors on top, Austin followed with a three-pointer. Lamar Wall gave KCC their first field goal in over five minutes, but the Warriors ran off nine quick points to break the game open.

Austin had two field goals in that span and Larry Stone drained a three. Stone scored a couple minutes later, concluding a 23-4 IHCC run.

Kirkwood scored the first eight points of the game before Indian Hills got on the board on back-to-back three's by Dwan McMillan. The Eagles eventually built a 12-point lead at 22-10, but the Warriors chipped away at the deficit and tied the score on a pair of free throws by E.J. Hicks in the final minute of the first half .

Jordan Stoermer sent the visitors to the lockerroom with a halftime lead when he nailed a three-pointer, his third of the half, with four seconds on the clock.

Kirkwood managed only six field goals in the second half though, four of those by Jarvis Williams. He led the Eagles with 20 points.

Austin scored 13 of his season-high 20 points in the final half for Indian Hills. McMillan scored 13 and Stone had 10. The Warriors shot 58% for the game, 23-of-40 from the field.

IHCC will try to make it five straight wins when they host NIACC on Wednesday night at 7:00.

Warriors Roll Over Lake County in Hy-Vee Classic

Ottumwa -- It took them a while to get untracked, but once they did the Indian Hills Warriors defeated visiting College of Lake County, 91-70, at the Hellyer Center on Friday night.

Lake County took a 7-2 lead at the start of the game and the score was still tied about midway through the opening half before Indian Hills outscored the Lancers, 30-16, to close the half.

A 14-point halftime lead included five three-pointers by five different players for IHCC. Aaron Austin started the second half with another trey and the Warriors were never in trouble in the final 20 minutes.

Indian Hills coach Jeff Kidder switched from his trademark man-to-man defense to a zone in the second half and the Warriors had some success in shutting down the Lancers' penetration and it helped Indian Hills maintain a comfortable lead.

Brian Wilson led the IHCC scoring with a season-high 18 points, just one fewer point than Wilson had scored in his first five games. Dijon Farr added 14 points and Austin and E.J. Hicks had 10 each for the Warriors. For Hicks, it was his second straight double-figure effort off the bench.

Rick Bowers, one of the Lancers' guards that gave the IHCC defense problems, led all scorers with 19 points.

On Saturday night, Indian Hills will look to avenge an earlier loss against Kirkwood when they play the Eagles in the final game of the Hy-Vee Classic.

Warriors Can Relax in Homecourt Win

Ottumwa -- Five of the last six games played by the Indian Hills Warriors weren't decided until the final minute. The Warriors made sure, with their pressure defense and three-point shooting, that wouldn't be the case on Wednesday night. Indian Hills raced away to a 24-point halftime lead and won going away, mauling visiting New Creations, 101-58, at the Hellyer Center.

New Creations led briefly in the early going as big men Walter Pitchford and Junior McLeod had success scoring inside against IHCC. But the Flyers' 16-13 lead quickly disappeared as the Warriors went on a 14-0 run to take control.

Brandon Garrett's slam dunk off a feed by Aaron Austin put the Warriors ahead for good at 17-16. Garrett scored again and E.J. Hicks drained a three-pointer to start the IHCC surge.

After Melvin Tillman made two free throws for New Creations, Indian Hills had a 24-9 run to end the first half.

Indian Hills repeatedly forced turnovers with their full-court press and the Warriors found the range shooting over the top of the Flyers' zone defense.

Austin and Dwan McMillan made consecutive three-pointers to start the second-half scoring and Larry Stone and McMillan added two more 3's a little later as the Warriors eventually built the advantage to 48 points.

Indian Hills hit seven three-pointers in the second half and tied a season-high with 11 for the game. The Warriors also got seven steals from McMillan and eight assists from Austin in winning their second game in a row following a three-game losing streak.

McMillan eclipsed his previous season high by one with 19 points to lead five IHCC players in double figures. Hicks scored 11 points off the bench and nailed three 3's for the Warriors.

Indian Hills will host the Hy-Vee Classic this weekend with games against the College of Lake County (Ill.) on Friday night and Kirkwood CC on Saturday. The Warriors will be trying to avenge an earlier loss to Kirkwood that started IHCC on its three-game slide. Game time both nights will be 7:00 after a 4:30 first game.

Hill, Free Throws Rescue IHCC

Ottumwa --- Freshman Derrick Hill responded in a big way to his first collegiate start on Saturday night, scoring 27 points and hitting a pair of free throws to produce the final points in Indian Hills' 76-73 victory against visiting Moraine Valley College.

Hill's point total was only seven fewer than his season scoring output through the Warriors' first eight games. And it went a long way toward helping Indian Hills snap a three-game losing streak.

But the win didn't come easy. Indian Hills trailed 68-66 after the Cyclones' Kaleb Watts scored on a layup with two minutes to play.

Aaron Austin hit a jump shot to tie the score at 68 and Dwan McMillan then got a steal and fed Dijon Farr for a layup to put IHCC on top, 70-68 with 1:08 to play.

Austin scored on a drive to build the lead to four, but the Cyclones weren't done yet. Their leading scorer, Krys Randolph, made one of two free throws and intercepted a pass on the MVC press and scored on a layup to cut the deficit to one with 37.8 seconds to play. Randolph had 19 points to lead Moraine Valley.

McMillan was fouled with 28.5 seconds left and calmly dropped in both free throws to make it 74-71.

Again, Moraine Valley answered, this time on a layup by Khodamus Llongbey to make it a one-point game.

That's when Hill put the finishing touches on his career night with two foul shots with 7.6 seconds remaining.

Randoph had a chance to tie it with two seconds left, but his three-pointer from the corner was off the mark and the Warriors picked off the rebound and the hard-fought victory.

The Warriors had struggled at the free throw line through the first eight games, shooting under 60 percent as a team. But their free-throw shooting helped them pull out this win. IHCC was 17-of-23 from the line for 74 percent.

Moraine Valley shot out to an early 6-2 lead with Dron Walker scoring all of MVC's points. Indian Hills took its first lead on a breakaway dunk by Farr. After Walker hit a free throw to tie the score at 7-all, IHCC ran away to a 28-15 lead.

Moraine Valley answered with an 18-6 run to close the gap to one point and the game stayed close the rest of the night.

The Cyclones took a one-point lead in the final minute of the first half, but Hill made a pair of free throws to finish off an 18-point first half and give the Warriors a 38-37 lead at intermission.

Indian Hills had a six-point lead early in the second half, but again Moraine Valley stormed back and took the lead on a three-pointer by Watts. The game was tied four times after that, the final deadlock broken by Austin's second consecutive field goal with just over a minute-and-a-half to play.

Farr added 17 points to Hill's game-high total and McMillan scored 14 for the winning Warriors.

Indian Hills will play three home games next week, starting with a Wednesday night contest against New Creations Basketball Academy.

Warriors Lose Third Straight in Double OT

Park Hills, Mo. -- Mineral Area outscored Indian Hills 6-2 in the second overtime period and defeated the Warriors 68-64 in the Bob Sechrest Classic Saturday night. The loss was the second in a row in the tourney for the Warriors and their third straight road loss of the week.

Dwan McMillan did his best to give the Warriors a chance to pull the game out and salvage the second game of the trip. McMillan hit a pair of free throws with 12.7 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 59. The sophomore guard made a shot in the lane, IHCC's only field goal of the first overtime, with 6.8 seconds left in the extra session to knot the game at 62-all.

But the Warriors couldn't score in the second overtime period until Larry Stone's basket with five seconds remaining. Carlton Guyton of MAC hit a three-pointer about midway through the second OT to give the Cardinals the lead for good. Kaleb Wright followed with a field goal for Mineral Area and Al Rapier gave them their final point with a free throw in the last minute.

Indian Hills endured a scoring drought in the first nine minutes of a game with Three Rivers the previous night and the Warriors' inability to score came back to haunt them at the end of this game. IHCC scored only five points in the ten minutes of overtime and uneven guard play hurt the Warriors' cause. Indian Hills committed 25 turnovers in the game.

The Warriors made up a five-point deficit in the second half when Aaron Austin hit two straight shots, the second a three-pointer to even the score at 51. Mineral Area opened up a 59-55 lead, but Brandon Garrett scored inside for the Warriors and McMillan followed with his two free throws, both in the final minute of regulation to let IHCC tie it at 59.

Indian Hills took a three-point halftime lead and built the margin to six early in the second half. A 12-3 run let MAC go on top 45-42 and the contest was close the rest of the night.

The loss leaves IHCC's season record at 5-3. The Warriors have a week off before taking on Moraine Valley (Ill.) on Nov. 28.

Second-Half Dry Spell Dooms Warriors

Park Hills, Mo. -- A scoring drought at the start of the second half that lasted for nearly nine minutes was too much to overcome as the Indian Hills Warriors dropped a 55-47 decision to No. 3-ranked Three Rivers at the Bob Sechrest Classic on Friday night.

Three Rivers (5-1) took a 28-21 lead into the second half and built the advantage to 37-21 before Aaron Austin's field goal at the 11:11 mark gave the Warriors their first points of the half. Marquise Carter followed with a three-pointer for the Raiders and TRCC had its biggest lead of the game at 40-23.

IHCC was finally able to generate some offense after the Carter trey started a 20-7 run for the Warriors (5-2). Dijon Farr, who had begun the spurt with a three, made a two-point goal to bring the Warriors to within four at 47-43.

Three Rivers then went inside to their backup post player, Aloysius Henry, on two straight possessions and he scored both times to build the lead back to eight points and IHCC didn't get closer than six after that.

Twenty-four turnovers and 10-of-22 free throw shooting were big reasons why the Warriors weren't able to complete the comeback try. IHCC was only 3-of-10 at the foul line in the second half.

After trailing early, the Warriors tied the score on a three-pointer by Aaron Austin and grabbed a brief lead on a Brian Wilson free throw. But that was the last time that Indian Hills would have a lead.

Three Rivers took their largest lead of the opening half at 24-15 before Farr hit consecutive field goals to cut the lead to four points. Farr led the IHCC scoring with 14 points. Austin joined him in double figures with 10.

Carter had a game-high 18 for Three Rivers.

Indian Hills will try to bounce back from the loss in the final game of the classic on Saturday night against host school Mineral Area.

Life on the Road Not So Good for IHCC

Cedar Rapids, IA --After winning their first five games of the season, all on their home court, the Indian Hills Warriors went on the road for the first time Tuesday and found out how difficult life away from home can be. The Warriors dropped a 66-55 decision to Kirkwood CC in a game in which IHCC didn't lead after the first six minutes of the first half.

Kirkwood's Brandon Pullman came off the bench to hit a three-pointer to give the Eagles the lead at 10-9, and then followed with a layup. The Warriors forged two ties, at 16-all and 18-all, but never led again on the way to their first loss of the year.

Larry Stone tried to keep the Warriors in the game in the opening half. The 5-7 guard scored nine straight points in one stretch. His fourth straight field goal brought the Warriors to within four points, but Pullman and Jordan Stoermer hit consecutive three-pointers for Kirkwood to help the Eagles grab their first double-digit lead with just over four minutes left in the half.

When Kaylon Williams scored right before the buzzer at the end of the half, Kirkwood took a ten-point lead to the lockerroom. The Warriors weren't able to get closer than six points in the second half.

Aaron Austin had back-to-back baskets to bring IHCC within six at 48-42 seven minutes into the second half. But the Warriors couldn't score on two straight possessions after that with a chance to reduce the deficit even further.

Austin fouled out with 6:51 to play. He tied Stone for team scoring honors with 14. Dwan McMillan added 13 points for Indian Hills.

Stoermer led all scorers with 15 for Kirkwood.

The Warriors failed to get much production from their big men. The guard trio of Austin, Stone and McMillan combined for 41 of IHCC's 55 points.

The road doesn't get any easier for the Warriors. They head to Park Hills, Missouri this weekend for games against Three Rivers CC on Friday and Mineral Area College on Saturday.

The Great Escape: Warriors Pull Out Another Win

Ottumwa -- It was quite a weekend for the Indian Hills basketball team. Friday night, they made up an 11-point deficit and came from behind to knock off Kennedy-King in their first game of the Klyn Automotive Classic. Saturday night, it took similar late-game heroics to allow the Warriors to stay undefeated.

Dwan McMillan scored six points in the final 33 seconds and the Warriors held off Ellsworth CC to win 83-79 at the Hellyer Center. McMillan's superb scoop shot allowed the Warriors to go ahead 79-78 with 13.8 seconds to play, just seconds after Ellsworth's L.C. Doss had drilled a three-pointer to put the Panthers ahead by one.

McMillan was fouled on his layup and made the free throw to complete the three-point play at make it 80-78. The Warriors then fouled Doss before he could launch another three and he made the first shot of a one-and-one. When he missed the second attempt, IHCC's Dijon Farr rebounded and was immediately fouled.

Farr made the first foul shot and missed the second to leave the score at 81-79 Indian Hills. Ellsworth grabbed the rebound after the missed free throw and called time out, a time out they didn't have. That resulted in a technical foul and McMillan made both free throws to provide the final margin.

The second half featured scoring runs by both teams. Ellsworth started the final 20 minutes with a 15-2 spurt to ahead 50-49. Bill Freeman, ECC's scoring leader, who was scoreless in the first half, hit two threes to fuel the Ellsworth run.

Freeman's second three put the Panthers ahead by a point, but Bruno Ferreira of Indian Hills scored consecutive baskets to begin a ten-point run for the Warriors. At the end of that run, IHCC was on top 59-50.

Ellsworth slowly cut into the deficit though. Freeman hit a free throw with a minute left to make it 76-72 and, after an Indian Hills turnover, he buried a three to make it a one-point game. McMillan's foul shot with 32.8 seconds remaining gave IHCC a short-lived lead before Doss nailed his three-pointer for Ellsworth's final lead.

Indian Hills ran away to a 15-point first-half lead and was ahead by 12 at halftime. Indian Hills had four 3's in the opening half, from four different players and, after making only 4-of-16 free throws the night before, hit 9-of 13 at the line. McMillan and Garrett combined to score 22 points in the half. John Wolfe came off the bench for Ellsworth to score 10 in the first half and he wound up with 14 points.

Doss led all scorers with 22, one more than Garrett scored for Indian Hills.

With the win, IHCC ended an unbeaten five-game homestand to start the season. The Warriors now embark on a very tough stretch of three road games in five days, starting with a trip to Kirkwood CC on Tuesday night.

Warriors Clamp Down On Kennedy-King For Comeback Win

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills held visiting Kennedy-King College without a point over the final six minutes of the game and, although they scored only seven points in that span, it was enough to get the Warriors their fourth straight win to start the season.

Dwan McMillan's free throw with 4:12 to play put the Warriors on top, 55-54, and McMillan scored on a drive with 1:18 remaining for the final points in a 57-54 IHCC win.

Kennedy-King led by as many as 11 points in the first half and by seven at halftime. The Statesmen got back-to-back field goals to take a 54-50 lead with over six minutes to play, but went scoreless the rest of the game. Still, they had a chance to tie in the waning seconds, but Jeremy Lee missed a three-point try and the Statesmen missed on a couple of tip-in tries.

McMillan had cut the KKC lead in half at 54-52 before the Warriors' Dijon Farr tied the score with a basket at the 5:10 mark of the second half. From there, both teams struggled offensively.

Byron Board of KKC had a one-and-one opportunity with 4:41 left, but missed the first free throw. McMillan was good on one of his two free throws 29 seconds later for what proved to be the game-winning point.

Kennedy-King used a 16-2 run to open up a 32-21 first-half lead. Reggie Smith, who led all scorers with 21 points, hit three straight field goals in that stretch, part of a 15-point first half for the KKC sophomore. Brandon Garrett's putback for the Warriors made it a seven-point game at halftime.

McMillan and Garrett had consecutive field goals to start the second half for IHCC. Smith drilled two straight threes not long after that, but he wouldn't score again thanks to some strong defensive play by IHCC's Aaron Austin.

Garrett tied the score at 48-all, Lee gave KKC a brief two-point lead, and Austin evened the score at 50, setting the stage for the tense final eight minutes of play.

Farr led Indian Hills with 19 points and McMillan added 15 and Austin 12. Smith was the only player in double figures for the Statesmen.

Indian Hills won despite a dismal night at the free-throw line where they made only 4 of 16 attempts. Kennedy-King shot only six free throws and made only two.

Indian Hills will take on undefeated Ellsworth CC on Saturday night.

Warriors Use Second-Half Run to Put Away Highland

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills scored nine quick points to open the second half, eventually built the lead to 19 and then held off a late charge by Highland CC to stay perfect through the first three games of the season. IHCC beat Highland, 66-52, in the final game of the Jack Blackwell Tire Company Classic on Saturday night.

The win was the third straight to start the season for the Warriors, who don't play again until they host the Klyn Automotive Classic next weekend at the Hellyer Center.

The Warriors took a halftime lead thanks to some late first-half heroics by 5-7 guard Larry Stone. With IHCC clinging to a one-point lead, Stone was fouled on a three-point field goal attempt. He made all three shots and then followed with two more free throws less than a minute later to put the Warriors up, 30-24. After consecutive baskets by Highland, Stone ended the first-half scoring with a three to send IHCC off at the half leading 33-28.

Indian Hills continued the run to start the second half. Brandon Garrett had two straight field goals, Aaron Austin and Dijon Farr combined to make three free throws and the Warriors got another field goal to build the lead to 42-28. Abel Tillman finally got Highland's first points of the half on a field goal over four minutes into the half, but the Warriors continued to get strong play from Garrett and Austin to go ahead 59-40.

The Cougars showed signs of life with a 10-0 spurt to cut the deficit to nine, but Garrett answered with a three-point play and a layup and that finished off Highland.

Garrett had 15 of his team-high 17 points in the final half to lead the IHCC scoring. Stone had 14 and Austin 11. Highland got 10 points from both Tillman and Tim Steed.

Indian Hills enjoyed a big advantage from the free throw line where they made 24-of-37, compared to just 9-of-13 by Highland.

Ottumwa -- Led by 19 points from Aaron Austin, 15 of them in the first half, Indian Hills defeated Lee College, 83-59, on the first night of the Jack Blackwell Tire Company Classic at the Hellyer Center Friday night. The win was the second in a row to start the season for the Warriors.

The visitors from Baytown, Texas had three early leads, before Indian Hills went ahead for good with a burst midway through the opening half that was fueled by Austin and Dijon Farr.

Indian Hills opened up a nine-point advantage at 33-24. Lee came back with consecutive field goals to make it a five-point game, but they didn't get any closer than that the rest of the night. The Warriors closed the half with a three-pointer by Farr, his third of the half, and a pair of free throws by Austin to take an 11-point lead at intermission.

The Warriors then scored six quick points on a basket by Bruno Ferreira and two by Brandon Garrett to start the second half and coasted home from there.

Indian Hills was able to frustrate Lee with an aggressive trapping defense. IHCC was credited with 10 steals, three by Austin.

Warriors Romp in Opener

Ottumwa, IA -- Indian Hills rolled to a 25-point halftime lead and routed visiting Carl Sandburg College, 91-51, at the Hellyer Student Life Center Tuesday night in the season-opener for both teams. Jeff Kidder, starting his 5th season as head coach of the Warriors, has a brand new roster made up of six sophomore transfers and nine freshmen. And it was a chance for all 10 players who saw action to get acclimated to IHCC basketball in a game that was decided very early in the first half.

One of the talented IHCC freshmen, Dijon Farr, helped get the Warriors off to a quick start with back-to-back three-pointers, the second of which made the score 9-2. Indian Hills had their first double-digit lead when Brandon Garrett hit a pair of free throws to push the advantage to 11 at 18-7. From there the lead steadily grew to as many as 28 points in the first half. Carl Sandburg didn't hit double figures as a team until just over three minutes remained in the half.

The halftime score was 41-16.

IHCC expanded the lead to 40 points at 60-20 early in the final half and led by as many as 47 points twice before settling for the 40-point final margin.

The Warriors showed they may have a pretty good outside shooting attack, hitting 11 3s on the night. Four of those came from Larry Stone who led the IHCC scoring with 20 points. Farr added 15 and Derrick Hill had 12. Both Farr and Hill had three treys.

Jo-Paul Jones scored all 15 of his team-leading points for Carl Sandburg in the second half.

All 10 of the Indian Hills players who played had at least one field goal.

The competition will get a lot tougher for the Warriors this weekend when they host the Jack Blackwell Tire Company Classic. IHCC will take on Lee College on Friday night and perennial power Highland Community College from Freeport, Illinois on Saturday night.

OTTUMWA --- A 2009-10 basketball schedule that includes 20 regular season home games and six tournaments has been released by Indian Hills Community College. Four of the tourneys will be played on the Warriors’ home court at the Hellyer Student Life Center.

Indian Hills, which was 30-3 a year ago, will play its first five games of this season at home. Then, after three straight games on the road, the Warriors will have another five-game homestand. The regular season concludes with six of the last nine games at the Hellyer Center.

The IHCC season and home opener will be Nov. 3 when the Warriors battle Carl Sandburg College from Galesburg, Illinois. The following weekend, Nov. 6-7, Indian Hills will host the first of its home invitationals, the Jack Blackwell Tire Classic. Indian Hills will take on Southwest Academy and Lee College from Baytown, Texas on consecutive nights.

Kennedy-King College from Chicago and Ellsworth CC will provide the opposition the next weekend for the Klyn Automotive Classic.

Indian Hills will have two home tourneys in December, hosted by Hy-Vee and Courtside Bar & Grill. The Warriors will play in two tournaments on the road, one in November when they take on Missouri powers Three Rivers and Mineral Area on back-to-back nights, and the other in Marshalltown in mid-December.

The Warriors will close out 2009 with three straight games Dec. 29-31. Mineral Area will be the opponent on Dec. 30 and IHCC will celebrate New Year’s Eve against Western Nebraska on the 31st.

The six-game conference season starts Jan. 16 with a home contest against Marshalltown and ends with a road trip to Southeastern on Feb. 20. Southeastern is the team that ended the Warriors’ season last year, winning the final two games in the best-of-three Region 11 postseason tourney.

Season tickets for the IHCC home games are currently on sale in the Indian Hills athletic office at the Hellyer Center on the Ottumwa campus. The cost is only $100 if purchased before October 1. After that, season tickets will be $120.

2008-09 Season Review

The Indian Hills basketball team spent the entire season ranked among the top five teams in the country and went over four months between their first and second losses. But the Warriors saw their season come crashing down in the span of three days in March when they lost the last two games of the Region XI championship series with Southeastern. The Warriors wound up the year with a 30-3 record, but fell short in their quest for a third straight trip to the national tournament.

Indian Hills started the year ranked No. 1 in the nation. They had a memorable matchup with second-ranked Chipola Junior College from Florida in the second game of the season and the Warriors lost a heartbreaker, 63-62. They didn’t taste defeat again until the back-to-back losses to SCC.

In the 29 straight victories between their first and second losses, the Warriors dominated their opponents, outscoring them by an average of over 25 points a game. Indian Hills had the second-best defense in the country, setting a school record by allowing only 54 points a game. And they posted an undefeated conference record for the second time in three years, winning all six of their league games by an average of 21 points per contest.

The high-scoring duo of Dwight Buycks and Dwight Hardy gave the Warriors two All-American selections with Buycks named to the NJCAA All-American first team and Hardy being chosen for the third team. Buycks and Hardy both passed the 1,000 point barrier for their two-year careers during the regular season and each was named to the All-Region first team. Leon Powell and James Washington were named second-team All-Region and Marcus Relphorde and Damian Windham were honorable mention choices.
