Warriors Head to Break with Solid Victory

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills basketball team avoided a potential letdown in the final game before the players scatter for Christmas break, the Warriors putting together a solid all-around performance in a 128-72 blowout of NIACC at the Hellyer Center on Tuesday night.

IHCC scored the most points by a Warrior team since the 1999-2000 season in ending the first half of the schedule with a 14-1 record.  The Warriors made 14 3-point field goals and forced 36 turnovers by the Trojans.

Jameel McKay was one of three IHCC players to score over 20 points, pouring in 29 and adding nine rebounds.  Ronald Ross buried five 3s on his way to a 23-point night and Frank Williams had 15 of his 21 in the second half.

Ross also had seven steals and seven assists and Rawane Ndiaye had a team-high 11 rebounds as the Warriors stayed undefeated in 11 home games this season.

After Mohamed Mohamed's three-point play gave NIACC a 13-11 lead about five minutes into the game, Martin Dixon-Green, who had a season-high 12 points off the IHCC bench, answered with his own three-point play and the Warriors never trailed again.

They quickly built the lead to double digits and put together a 33-10 run.  NIACC scored seven straight points, but the Warriors sprinted away after that to a 64-36 halftime lead.  Ironically, the margin was idential in the second half with Indian Hills outscoring the Trojans 64-36 over the final 20 minutes.

The 14 made 3s were one fewer than the season-high of 15 set last Friday against Clinton.  It was the ninth time in 15 games that IHCC has broken the century mark and lifted the season scoring average to 106.7.

Mohamed Mohamed led five double-figure scorers for NIACC with 19 points.

After playing its last five games at home, the next five for the Warriors are away from home, starting with three contests in five days in Arizona to begin the month of January.  The last of those five straight road games will be the conference opener at Northeast (Neb.) on Jan. 16.

McKay and Ross Lead Short-Handed Warriors to Victory

Ottumwa -- On a night when 11th-ranked Indian Hills needed someone to step up and fill the void caused by four missing players, a trio of sophomores and an unheralded freshman did just that.

Jameel McKay used his strong inside game to score a career-high 32 points and grad 14 rebounds, Ronald Ross tallied 21 points and dished out 10 assists and Frank Williams chipped in 13 points as Indian Hills picked up a 97-82 win against Mineral Area College in the HyVee Classic on Saturday night.

McKay's previous high was 31 points in a win against Independence a week before.

IHCC's Jelan Kendrick and Ronnie Stevens were already sidelined for the weekend's games with shoulder injuries.  Joining them on the bench Saturday was Trinson White, who was ill and wasn't in uniform, and Richard Amardi, who went down with an injury less than two minutes into the first half and never returned to action.

So the Warriors counted on their sophomores to pull them through and they did.  With some help from freshman Majok Deng, who was pressed into service early and came through with eight points and eight rebounds.

That was more than enough to offset the Mineral Area duo of Shaq Boga and Jay Raulston, who combined for 49 of their team's points.  Boga had 26 and Raulston 23, but nobody else reached double figures for the Cardinals who are now 13-3 with all three of their losses coming to Iowa schools.  They had lost earlier to Iowa Western and Southeastern.

The game was tied four times early, the last at 23-all.  Indian Hills scored five straight points to make it 28-23 and the Warriors never trailed after that.  They got their first double-digit lead at 45-35 on a bucket by Ross late in the first half and Deng ended the half with a putback to give IHCC a 49-38 edge at intermission.

McKay made one of his six second-half field goals to open the scoring after halftime and the lead hovered between 13 and 19 points for most of the second half.

The win was the fourth in a row in the current five-game homestand for the Warriors, who have won 10 consecutive games at home this year and 30 straight over the past two years.

Indian Hills will end the first half of their schedule when they host NIACC on Tuesday night at 7:00.

Warriors Blister Clinton for Win No. 12

Ottumwa -- In coach Barret Peery's 50th game as head at Indian Hills, his squad posted season-highs for points, field goals, field goal attempts, 3-pointers made and offensive rebounds in rolling over Clinton CC, 121-63, at the Hellyer Center Friday night.

The Warriors drilled nine 3s in the first half -- including four by Frank Williams and three by Trinson White -- in opening up a 69-28 halftime lead and didn't let up in the second half in raising their season record to 12-1.  Nine of those 12 wins this season have come at home, where the Warriors have now won 29 straight games over the past two seasons.

Williams had a career night for Indian Hills, pouring in 27 points to exceed his previous best scoring output of 20 points in a win at Kirkwood ten days before.  White equalled his career high with his 17 points.

Indian Hills also got 19 points from Jameel McKay and 18 from Ronald Ross in surpassing the 100-point mark for the eighth time already this year, one more than all of last year.

The Warriors buried 15 3s and hit 50-of-101 shot attemts, all of those numbers season highs.

Clinton scored the first two points of the game and never led again.  Williams hit back-to-back shots, the second a 3-pointer, to put IHCC ahead and the lead steadily grew after that.  The margin was 41 points by halftime and as many as 60 points late in the second half.

Richard Hurt scored 13 points to lead Clinton and Xzavion Jones added 12 for the Cougars.

Indian Hills closes out the HyVee Classic on Saturday night when the Warriors face Mineral Area at 7:00.

McKay's Career Night Paces Warriors

Ottumwa -- One night after he was benched for a "violation of team rules," Jameel McKay returned to the lineup in a big way, scoring a career-best 31 points as Indian Hills blasted Independence (Kan.) CC, 117-94 on Saturday night in the Warriors' own PCS Classic.

McKay had 21 of his points in the second half and he added 11 rebounds in the Warriors' 11th win against only one loss.

He had lots of help as the Warriors put five other players in double figures and went over the 100-point scoring total for the seventh time in 12 games, matching the number of 100-point games they had all of last year in 37 games.

Independence was able to whittle a big IHCC lead down to 13 points early in the second half.  The Warriors then ran off 13 straight points in 2:29 to push the lead back to 82-58 and they never led by fewer than 20 points after that.

Dustin Hogue complemented McKay's big night with 16 points and hit 11-of-14 free throws.  Gary Williams, Jr. added 15 and Frank Williams had 14.

Indian Hills never trailed, opening up an early 6-0 lead.  The Warriors broke away from an 8-7 score with a quick 16-4 burst and led by 21 at the half.

TraVaughn White had a huge night in a losing cause, scoring 37 points for ICC.  The Pirates attempted 45 free throws, and made 34, as the Warriors continue to give their opponents plenty of opportunities at the foul line.

The Warriors won't play again until next weekend's HyVee Classic.  They will take on Clinton CC on Friday night and Mineral Area College on Saturday.

Warriors Still Perfect at Home after Routing Malcolm X

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills broke away from visiting Malcolm X College with a 27-3 run in the first half and the Warriors went on to notch their 10th win of the season on Friday night, blistering the Hawks, 115-77.

Malcolm X hung with the 12th-rated Warriors early in the game, forging five ties and eventually taking a 26-23 lead.  That's when IHCC caught fire, scoring 27 of the next 30 points, a run that ended with the Warriors scoring 18 points in a row.

By halftime, the lead had grown to 25 points and Indian Hills didn't let up in the second half.  When Ronald Ross hit a 3-pointer with 7 1/2 minutes to play, IHCC had eclipsed the 100-point mark for the sixth time in the season.

It was one of four 3s for Ross, who scored a team-high 21 points.  Five teammates joined him in double figures.  Richard Amardi tied his season high with 14 and Gary Williams, Jr. also scored 14.

The Warriors played without their leading scorer, Jameel McKay, whom coach Barret Peery said sat out the game because of a violation of team rules.

Kendrick Nichols had a big night for Malcolm X, leading all scorers with 32 points.

The victory improves the Warriors' season record to 10-1.  They will wrap up the two-day PCS Classic on Saturday night when they host Independence (Kan.) CC.

Williams' Career Night Helps Warriors To Road Win

Cedar Rapids, IA -- Frank Williams buried his fourth 3-pointer of the game, right before the buzzer at the end of the first half, to give Indian Hills a lead it would not relinquish as the Warriors went on to dump Kirkwood, 95-88, at Johnson Hall on Tuesday night.

Williams' bucket made it 39-37 at the half, in favor of the Warriors, who had battled back from an early seven-point deficit.  The 6-7 sophomore added two more 3s in the second half on his way to a career-high 20 points.

Jelan Kendrick started the second half for the Warriors with a 3-point play.  After Kirkwood's Devan Douglas hit a 3-pointer, Williams answered with a three of his own to make it, 46-40.

IHCC eventually built the lead to 12 at 56-44.  Kirkwood cut the deficit to three points after a pair of free throws by Gage Heffernan, but Ronald Ross put the lead back at six with his third 3 of the game and the Indian Hills lead was never less than six the rest of the way.

The Warriors followed up a poor first-half free throw shooting performance by making 22-of-27 in the final half.  The two teams combined to shoot 90 free throws and there were 62 fouls called in the contest.

Dustin Hogue scored all of his 14 points in the second half for the Warriors and Gary Williams, Jr. scored 13, all but two of them at the foul line where he was 11-for-15.  Indian Hills had six players in double figures.  Kirkwood had five, led by 17 points each for Najeal Young and J.C. Fuller.

Indian Hills now returns home for five consecutive games, starting with two in the PCS Classic this weekend.  The Warriors face Malcolm X on Friday and Independence (KS) Saturday.

It was IHCC's 26th consecutive win at the Hellyer Center and their 8th win overall this season.

The Warriors used an 8-0 run to pull away from a 20-20 tie in the first half and increased the lead to 15 at 52-37 by halftime.  They shot 57% in the opening half, 75% from inside the 3-point arc.

Both Jamel McKay and Justin Moss had 10 of their 12 points by halftime.  McKay wound up with a double-double with 11 rebounds to go along with his dozen points.

Indian Hills ran out to a 20-point lead in the second half, but the Panthers battled back to within seven points on two occasions, the last at 85-78 after a 3-pointer by David Dep.

Jelan Kendrick -- who led the Warriors with 18 points and added nine assists -- and Dustin Hogue scored for IHCC and Trinson White added a field goal to get the lead back to 13 and Ellsworth didn't threaten again.

Ronald Ross hit four 3s and scored 17 for the Warriors and Hogue tallied 16.  Malcolm Canada's 25 points for ECC led all scorers.

CSI Hands Warriors First Loss

Twin Falls, ID -- In a matchup between two teams ranked in top seven in the nation in the preseason poll, Southern Idaho withstood a late Indian Hills rally in regulation and pulled out a 96-87 overtime decision over the Warriors on CSI's homecourt Saturday night.

The loss was the first of the season for the Warriors, ranked 5th in the preseason and 4th in this week's poll and winners of their first seven games.  Southern Idaho, the No. 7-rated team going into the season, improved to 7-2.

Ronald Ross helped Indian Hills come back from a 78-65 deficit in the final five minutes of the second half.  Ross buried three 3s in that period and his final 3 tied the game at 80-80 with 33 seconds to play.

Montigo Alford, who had suffered a heel injury in the first half and returned to action in the second stanza, missed a jumper as time expired to send the game into overtime.  Alford's 3-pointer with 3:25 remaining in overtime, a shot that just beat the shot clock buzzer, gave CSI the lead for good at 85-83.

The Golden Eagles then scored four straight points to go ahead 89-83 and the Warriors didn't get closer than four points after that.

After struggling at the free throw line the first 40 minutes, CSI knocked down 7-of-10 foul shots in OT.

Southern Idaho started fast, jumping out to a 13-4 lead in a little more than seven minutes of play.  They led 23-16 with 8:20 left in the half, but IHCC's full-court pressure started to pay off.  The Warriors took their first lead since Jameel McKay's opening basket on a field goal by Frank Williams that made the score 27-25.

Indian Hills stretched the lead to 38-31 by halftime and led for the first three minutes of the second half.

Southern Idaho then ran off 11 straight points and eventually built the lead to the 13-point margin they owned before Ross' heroics for Indian Hills.

Although forcing 19 CSI turnovers, the Warriors were hurt by their own inability to take care of the ball with 25 turnovers.

McKay had a huge night in a losing cause for IHCC, scoring 19 points and picking off a career-high 20 rebounds.  Justin Moss also had 19 points and Dustin Hogue tallied nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Jaysean Paige led CSI with 24 points and Kareem Storey added 18.

Indian Hills has six of its next seven games before Christmas at home, starting with a contest next Friday night against Ellsworth CC.

Huge Second Half Results in Blowout Win

Twin Falls, ID -- It took the Indian Hills Warriors a while to get untracked in their game with Treasure Valley CC in the opening game of the Boise Office Equipment Invite on Friday.  In fact, the Warriors really didn't get rolling until the second half.  They exploded for 74 points, though, in the final 20 minutes and throttled Treasure Valley, 117-67.

Indian Hills found itself trailing early, 9-1, and didn't go on top for good until a layup by Jameel McKay made it 20-19 with 11 1/2 minutes to go in the first half.  From there the Warriors increased the lead to nine by halftime.

IHCC's first three field goals of the second half -- two by Richard Amardi and one by Frank Williams -- came in the paint and the Warriors continued to have great success inside the TVCC defense.

Ronald Ross had a relatively quiet first half with six points on two 3s, but he came to life in the final half, drilling five more 3s, the final one pushing Indian Hills over the 100-point mark.  Ross led all scorers with a season-high 25 points and was 7-of-9 from behind the arc.

McKay added 18 points and nine rebounds and Justin Moss had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Treasure Valley placed four players in double figures, with Christopher Willis' 16 leading the way.

Indian Hills improved to 7-0 for the season and will get a chance to play the host school for this tournament, College of Southern Idaho, on Saturday night.

Warriors Escape in First Road Game

Salt Lake City, UT -- After his team won their first five games of the season, all at home, Indian Hills coach Barret Peery was anxious to see how his team would respond when they played away from the confines of the Hellyer Center.  The IHCC coach had to be happy with the way his squad passed their first road test on Tuesday night, escaping with a 94-84 double-overtime win against Salt Lake CC.

The No. 4 Warriors outscored Salt Lake 14-4 in the second OT session to get the win in the first game on a three-game road trip.

After leading for a good portion of the 40 minutes of regulation, the Warriors needed a 3-pointer by Frank Williams to get the game into overtime.  Salt Lake used a late 9-1 run to take a 74-71 lead before Williams, IHCC's leading 3-point shooter so far this season, extended the game with a shot from behind the arc.

It was the Bruins' turn to score the tying field goal in the first overtime.  Skylar Halford made consecutive baskets, the second knotting the score at 80.

Trinson White's jump shot with just over 3 1/2 minutes left in the second OT put the Warriors on top for good and they stretched the lead after that to the final 10-point margin.

Indian Hills got off to a fast start, taking an early 10-2 lead on the strength of two 3s by White.  The Warriors eventually built the advantage to 35-21 after a 3-pointer by Ronald Ross.

Salt Lake began to chip away the remainder of the opening half and got the deficit to eight at intermission.  The Bruins quickly tied the score at the outset of the second half and the game was close after that.

Justin Moss had a 15-point, 13-rebound night to lead Indian Hills.  Jameel McKay added 11 points and 15 boards.  Halford's 20 points topped Salt Lake.

The Warriors are back in action this weekend in a tournament hosted by College of Southern Idaho, where IHCC coach Peery had his first head-coaching job.  Indian Hills will battle Treasure Valley (Ore) on Friday and then match up with Southern Idaho on Saturday.

Homecourt Win Over Kennedy-King Keeps IHCC Perfect

Ottumwa -- Playing the final game of a season-opening five-game homestand, No. 4-ranked Indian Hills pulled away from Kennedy-King for a 92-56 victory at the Hellyer Center on Thursday night.

The offensive average for the Warriors actually fell to 105.6 points a game, even though they outscored the Statesmen, 51-29 in the second half.  Indian Hills only dressed 10 players for the game.  All 10 scored and five were in double figures, led by Justin Moss with a season-high 19.

The Warriors scored the first 10 points of the contest and led 25-6 about midway through the opening half.  Kennedy-King cut the margin to 11 points, but never got closer than that.

It was 41-27 at the half and the Warriors then used their full-court press to widen the lead early in the second half.  Kennedy-King committed 24 turnovers and was held to 30-percent shooting from the field.

Dustin Hogue, who signed a letter-of-intent to attend Iowa State on Wednesday, had a double-double for Indian Hills with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors shot 54-percent (35-65).

Indian Hills next week plays its first road games of the season -- three games in five nights.  The Warriors meet Salt Lake CC on Tuesday on the Bruins' home floor and then head north to Idaho where they will play back-to-back games against Treasure Valley (OR) and College of Southern Idaho right after Thanksgiving.

The next home game is against Ellsworth CC on Nov. 30.

Paris is No Match for Warriors

Ottumwa -- The final margin was nowhere near what most had expected in Saturday's matchup between Indian Hills and Paris JC in the final game of the two-day Reed Overhead Doors Classic.  The two teams battled on the Warriors' home court last season and the Warriors prevailed, 84-78.  This time around, Indian Hills raced away to a 17-point halftime lead and buried the visitors from Texas, 115-80, as the Warriors notched their fourth win in a row to open the season.

The game was tied twice early, the second time at 8-all.  Indian Hills used a 12-2 run to gain control and never looked back, forcing 27 Paris turnovers on the night.

The lead was 55-38 at intermission and Indian Hills ran off nine straight points to open the second half as the lead ballooned to 26 points.

Jelan Kendrick poured in a game-high 25 points to lead Indian Hills.  Jameel McKay had his second straight double-double of the weekend with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Mike Harmon and Eddie Leal scored 14 points each for Paris.

Indian Hills has one more home game -- this Thursday night against Kennedy-King --  in a season-opening five-game home stand before going on the road for three consecutive games.

Indian Hills Slams Mid-Michigan in Classic

Ottumwa -- Fifth-ranked Indian Hills ran away to a 64-25 halftime lead and didn't let up in the second half as the Warriors won their third straight game to open the season, drilling Mid-Michigan, 118-65 at the Hellyer Center Friday night.

The Warriors' relentless pressure defense forced Mid-Michigan into 33 turnovers and Indian Hills used its superior size advantage to dominate the boards on both ends.  IHCC outrebounded MMCC, 62-36, and the Warriors grabbed 29 offensive rebounds.

Frank Williams led seven Indian Hills players in double figures with 16 points.  Jameel McKay and Ronnie Stevens both had double-doubles -- 13 points and 10 rebounds for Stevens, 11 points and 11 rebounds for McKay.

Kendall Thomas's 23 points led Mid-Michigan.  He scored 18 of those points in the second half.

The Warriors figure to get a much tougher test on Saturday night when they take on Paris Junior College in the finale of the Reed Overhead Doors Classic.  IHCC defeated Paris, 84-78, in a game at the Hellyer Center last year.

Warriors Come Out on Top in Battle of Ranked Teams

Ottumwa -- In a game that had 46 tunrovers, 58 fouls and 76 free throw attempts, Indian Hills held off Kirkwood to win a matchup of two teams ranked in the top-seven in their respective divisions on Saturday night.  Not until Gary Williams, Jr. hit two free throws with 1.2 seconds to play could Indian Hills, rated 5th in the NJCAA Division I preseason poll, nail down its 94-89 win against Kirkwood, the 7th-ranked team in Division II.

The Warriors started the second half by scoring 11 straight points to take a seven-point halftime advantage and increase it to 18 at 56-38.  But Kirkwood roared back with a 20-2 run and tied the game on a basket by Taylor Olson with just over 12 minutes to play.  After that, there were five more ties and four lead changes.

The last time the lead changed hands was when IHCC's Frank Williams nailed a 3-pointer to put the Warriors on top 72-70.  Although they got to within a single point four times after that, Kirkwood couldn't get the score back to even.

The Eagles were down 90-89 after Olson made a pair of free throws with under two minutes to play.  Ronald Ross then hit the biggest shot of the night for Indian Hills, a jumper from just outside the free throw lane to make it 92-89.

Kirkwood then missed two 3-point tries on separate possessions in the final minute before Williams cemented the Warriors' second straight win with their 31st and 32nd made free throws.  Indian Hills' 32-of-45 performance at the foul line was a big reason for the Warriors' victory.

Ross hit back-to-back 3s early in the game as part of an 8-0 run that gave Indian Hills an early 11-3 lead.  IHCC eventually built the margin to 26-10.  A quick 12-2 burst got the Eagles back into the game, a preview of what would happen in the second half after the Warriors opened up a double-digit lead.

Ross led the IHCC scoring with 17 points.  Dustin Hogue added 14 before fouling out, one of three Warriors who exited with five fouls.

Najeal Young's 26 points led KCC and Kasey Semler added 24.

Indian Hills swept its two games in the season-opening Blackwell Tire Classic and will host another tournament next weekend -- the Reed Overhead Doors Classic.  The Warriors take on Mid-Michigan CC on Friday night and Paris JC from Texas on Saturday.

Warriors Roll in Opener

Ottumwa -- Like most opening games, there was good and bad for head coach Barret Peery to analyze after Friday's IHCC game against Carl Sandburg College in the Blackwell Tire Classic.  But the second-year Indian Hills coach was obviously happy with the outcome, a 109-84 win for the fifth-ranked Warriors.

"We're still a work in progress," Peery said, "but I like our pieces so far."

The Warriors' coach had to like what he saw when Indian Hills put together two separate runs in the first half to break away from the visitors and grab a 48-29 halftime lead.

However, the Warriors weren't able to completely subdue the Cougars until the final minutes of the second half.  Carl Sandburg made more 3-pointers in the second half, eight, than they had total field goals in the first half.  They also forced 23 IHCC turnovers and shot 35 free throws, thanks to 29 Warrior fouls.

Indian Hills had too much firepower though with seven players in double figures and a decided rebounding advantage.  And the Warriors' press was reponsible for causing many of CSC's 29 turnovers.

Sophomore Jameel McKay picked up where he left off last year when he had double-doubles in all four games in the national tournament, on his way to being named to the all-tournament team.  McKay kept his streak alive Friday with a 20-point, 17-rebound effort.

He had six field goals in the first half, all of them off offensive rebounds.  And McKay had 13 rebounds at halftime.

Jelan Kendrick, who transferred to IHCC after a season in the SEC with Mississippi, helped provide support with 16 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double of his own.

Justin Moss and Ronald Ross illustrated the depth Peery feels he has with this year's Warrior team, both scoring in double figures -- 13 for Moss and 11 for Ross.  Ross also came up with five steals.

Three Indian Hills sophs, all in the starting lineup, also had double-figure scoring nights.  Frank Williams scored 11 and had three of IHCC's four 3-pointers, and Ronnie Stevens and Trinson White had 10 apiece.

Carl Sandburg placed four players in double figures, led by Marvin Nunn's 19 points and 18 f rom Seth Wickert.

The Warriors will get a stiff early test on Saturday night when Kirkwood, ranked 7th in the preseason in NJCAA Division II, battles IHCC at 7:00.  Kirkwood tuned up for the meeting with a 102-50 blowout of the William Penn JV in Friday's opening game.

Warriors Start 2nd in Basketball Times Poll

OTTUMWA --- Indian Hills has picked up another top-five national ranking as the Warriors make final preparations for their season opener on Friday. Basketball Times has the Warriors number-two in their junior college Dandy Dozen preseason ratings. The magazine, with its November issue available at newsstands now, has been in existence for over three decades and is one of the most trusted sources of basketball news.

Tony Jimenez, a long-time follower of junior college hoops who wrote that section, described this year’s Indian Hills team as having a “deep roster led by 6-8 Jameel McKay and (6-4) Ronald Ross.”

McKay is number-three on the publication’s list of Super Sophomores, described as a “multi-talented player committed to Marquette.”

Northwest Florida State, whom Basketball Times reports has five of its top seven players are transfers, is ranked first and Iowa Western is fifth.

The Warriors were rated fifth in the NJCAA preseason poll that came out last week.

Warriors Ranked 5th in Preseason Poll

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills basketball team will head into the new season with a number-five national ranking. The Warriors are coming off a 33-4 season and a seventh-place finish at the national tournament last year and return two of the top three scorers from that squad.

The preseason poll, released this week by the National Junior College Athletic Association, has the Warriors trailing only South Plains (Tex.) and Northwest Florida State, the two teams that played for the national title last year, as well as Howard (Tex.) and Chipola (Fla.).

Three teams that are on the Warriors’ regular season schedule are ranked in the preseason poll in either Division I or II. Conference foe Iowa Western CC is rated 20th in the DI poll; College of Southern Idaho, whom Indian Hills defeated in the national tourney in March, is 7th. The Warriors take a trip to Utah and Idaho next month, playing three games in five nights, and they’ll battle Southern Idaho in the final game of the trip on Nov. 24. CSI was 31-5 a year ago.

Kirkwood CC is the lone DII school the Warriors will play this year that is ranked in the preseason. The Eagles, who will provide the opposition for IHCC in the second game of the season in the Blackwell Tire Classic on Nov. 3, are 7th. Indian Hills will travel to Cedar Rapids for a rematch with Kirkwood on Dec. 4.

Indian Hills was rated 9th in the preseason last year and ended the season with the national tourney berth, the 9th in school history. They were ranked in the top ten all season long and made it to the top of the ratings for one week in January after starting the season with 19 consecutive wins.

It’s the sixth time that IHCC has been in the top ten in the preseason rankings since the 2000-01 season.

This year’s home- and season-opener is Nov. 2 against Carl Sandburg (Ill.). The Warriors will play 17 regular-season home games at the Hellyer Center where they were a perfect 20-0 a year ago.

Fans can still purchase season tickets for the 2012-13 campaign. They are $102 each and available in the IHCC Athletic Office in the Hellyer Center.

Hoops Schedule Features Both New and Familiar Foes

OTTUMWA --- Two teams that joined Indian Hills in the NJCAA national tournament field last March, Three Rivers (Mo.) and College of Southern Idaho, and a new conference foe, Northeast (Neb.), are among the opponents on the Warriors’ 2012-13 basketball schedule.

“I think our schedule will be a great challenge for us and it fits our team very well,” said IHCC coach Barret Peery of the 30-game regular season slate that includes 17 home games.

The season will begin with back-to-back home tournaments, two of the four tourneys IHCC will host this year.

The season-opening tournament, the Blackwell Tire Classic, is Nov. 2-3 with the Warriors playing Carl Sandburg (Ill.) in the opener and Kirkwood the following night.

The next weekend Indian Hills will welcome Paris (Tex.) back to the Hellyer Center as part of the Reed Overhead Doors Classic. IHCC won a hard-fought game with Paris, 84-78, last year. Paris won the national title in 2005.

PCS and HyVee will also host two-day tournaments, both of them in December.

There will be two long three-game road trips. In November, the Warriors play at Salt Lake CC and then travel to a tourney hosted by Southern Idaho. Indian Hills defeated Southern Idaho in last year’s national tournament on the way to a seventh-place finish.

IHCC will play three games in Arizona in a five-day period, starting New Year’s Day. Those contests will be followed by a game at Three Rivers and one at Northeast (Neb.).

Peery said all the road games will be very challenging, especially the trip to Utah and Idaho and a pair of games in Missouri at Three Rivers and Moberly. He notes that will be a great way to prepare his team for the rugged conference schedule which now consists of eight games. Two of them will be played on Wednesdays, including the home encounter with Southeastern.

Indian Hills returns two of its top three scorers, Jameel McKay and Dustin Hogue, and other important parts from a team that finished 33-4 last year and earned the school’s ninth national tourney appearance.

“With so many returning players, I’m excited to challenge them with some great home games here at the Hellyer Center,” said the IHCC head coach.

Indian Hills went undefeated, 20-0, at home last year and has an incredible homecourt winning percentage of .907 over the last two decades.

The 2012-13 basketball schedule can be found on the IHCC website at www.indianhills.edu. Ticket information for the home games will be released later this month.

Former Warrior Michael Haynes Killed

Ottumwa -- Michael Haynes, a key contributor on last year's Indian Hills national tournament basketball team, was killed Thursday in a shooting in his hometown of Chicago.

According to news reports, Haynes was shot when he tried to break up a fight between neighborhood friends over a necklace.  He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The 22-year old Haynes had signed a letter-of-intent with Iona College in New York and reportedly was set to move there next week.

"We're shocked and deeply saddened by this news," said Indian Hills coach Barret Peery, who had recruited Haynes to be a part of his first team at IHCC prior to the 2011-12 season.  "Michael was such a great kid and great member of our team," Peery said.  "He was a popular guy who absolutely loved being a part of this family."

Haynes averaged 6.9 points and 4.5  rebounds in his only season with Indian Hills.  He played in 31 games and started 11.  The 6-foot-7-inch power forward came to Indian Hills after attending the University of Texas-El Paso.

"Michael had a bright future," Peery added.  "He had done everything to give himself the opportunity to continue his education and career.  It's a sad end to the story."

Mickeal to Return to IHCC

Ottumwa -- Former Indian Hills Community College basketball All-American and Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Pete Mickeal will be honored at a special event on the IHCC campus on Friday, July 27.

Mickeal was a member of the first-ever Hall of Fame class at Indian Hills, but was unable to attend the induction ceremony last February. He had a good excuse, though. He was busy playing in his third season with FC Barcelona in Spain.

The Rock Island, Ill. native will return to the Midwest this month and will come to Ottumwa to receive his Hall of Fame award. The special induction ceremony will take place in Warrior Junction in the Advanced Technology Center on the IHCC Ottumwa campus. The event will run from 4 – 6 p.m. Mickeal will be presented his Hall of Fame crystal and there will be an opportunity to visit with the former IHCC star.

Mickeal was a first-team All-American for the Warriors in 1998, a year in which he was also named the national Player of the Year and the MVP at the national tournament. He is the second-leading scorer in school history.

After playing on back-to-back national championship teams at Indian Hills, Mickeal went to the University of Cincinnati where he was a first-team all-conference choice both years he played for the Bearcats.

Mickeal recently finished his third season with FC Barcelona, helping them to a spot in the Euroleague Final Four and a third-place finish in the tourney. In his initial season in Spain in 2009-10, Mickeal’s FC Barcelona team won the Euroleague title as well as the Spanish League crown.

A knee injury cut short Mickeal’s 2010-11 season, but he came back strong this past season when FC Barcelona had the most wins in the Euroleague and the Spanish League.

Mickeal has had a long and distinguished professional basketball career, playing in five different foreign countries following a stint in the American Basketball Association.

The public is invited to the induction ceremony and reception for Mickeal on July 27.

IHCC's Buckley Headed Back to Michigan

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills sophomore DeAndray Buckley has signed a letter of intent with Central Michigan University.  Buckley, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound wing, played this past season for the Warriors after spending his freshman year at the University of New Hampshire.

Buckley, a native of Detroit, was one of the captains on this year's IHCC squad.  He averaged 5.6 points and 2.6 rebounds.  He missed six games in January and February with a knew injury and the injury forced him to sit out three postseason games as well.  But he returned to the lineup and played the final three games in the national tournament scoring 16 points in those contests, including nine against Southern Idaho.

Buckley was an honorable mention all-region choice in his lone season at IHCC.

Central Michigan earlier hired former Drake University head coach Keno Davis as its new coach.  And Davis is happy to add Buckley to the roster for his first team.  "DeAndray has been a leader both on and off the court at two storied programs -- Romulus High School and Indian Hills," said Davis.  "His combination of toughness, high basketball IQ and outstanding academic record make him a great fit for our program."

In high school, Buckley was part of a school-record 79 victories in four years and played in two state semifinals.  He averaged over 15 points and nine rebounds as a senior.

Spearman to Play in Hawaii

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills guard Brandon Spearman has signed a letter of intent with the University of Hawaii.  Spearman, a Chicago native, played one season at IHCC after transferring from Dayton.

Spearman quickly established himself as a team leader for the Warriors and was the second-leading scorer at 11.7 points a game.  He played in all 37 games and started more games -- 30 -- than anyone else on the roster.

He was second on the Warriors in 3-pointers with 53 and his 29 points against Ellsworth CC were the most scored by an IHCC player in a game this season.

Spearman was a second-team all-region choice.

Ricks Signs with Drake

Ottumwa -- Gary Ricks, Jr., a Southern California guy who started his college basketball career in Iowa, will stay in the state to continue his education and career.  Ricks, a native of Sylmar, Cal., has signed a letter of intent with Drake University.

Ricks earned Honorable Mention All-American honors after a sophomore season in which he led Indian Hills to a seventh-place finish at the NJCAA national tournament and a 33-4 record.  He averaged 10.0 points a game, led the team in free throw percentage (.732) and three-pointers (97) and was a second-team All-Region choice.

Playing in all 70 IHCC games over the past two seasons, Ricks was one of the best three-point shooters in school history.  He had a total of 170 3s, three shy of the school record held by Dwight Hardy.  His 97 threes this year were five fewer than Hardy's single-season record.

Ricks had a career scoring average of 11.2 and led the team in free throw percentage as a freshman as well, shooting .807 from the line.  His two-year three-point field goal percentage was .424.

Drake coach Mark Phelps said, "Gary is one of the top shooters in the country.  He brings maturity and leadership to our team at the guard position."

"He is a winner who will improve all aspects of our guard play next year.  We are extremely excited about his joining our family."

D.J. Headed to OU

Ottumwa -- All the hard work that D.J. Bennett put in leading up to and during his sophomore season at Indian Hills has paid off.  Bennett has signed a letter-of-intent with the University of Oklahoma.

Bennett parlayed a successful year at Indian Hills in which he averaged 7.2 points and 4.6 rebounds into attention from a number of Division I schools.  He signed with the Sooners after visiting the OU campus.

Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said, "We're very happy D.J. has chosen to be a Sooner.  He brings high energy, shot-blocking ability and rebounding skills.  He also has the potential to be more of a scorer in the low post than he has been."

Bennett led IHCC in blocks this past season with 63 and he shot .673 from the field.  His breakout sophomore campaign came after a freshman season in which he scored only 72 points in 24 games.

The 6-8, 215-pound Bennett may have been the most improved player on the Indian Hills team this season.  He was one of only two holdovers from the previous year and really flourished in the second half of the season.  After scoring in double figures in only three of the first 25 games, Bennett scored 10 or more points in seven of the last 12 contests with a high game of 21.

McKay, Ricks, Jr. Are All-Americans

OTTUMWA --- Indian Hills Community College basketball players Jameel McKay and Gary Ricks, Jr. have been named National Junior College Athletic Association All-Americans.

McKay, a freshman, was selected to the All-American first team and Ricks, a sophomore, was an Honorable Mention choice.

The Warriors’ scoring (14.6) and rebounding (7.7) leader, McKay was one of ten players picked for the first team. He had a field goal percentage of .619 and was a key part of the Warriors’ seventh-place finish in the NJCAA national tournament.

The Milwaukee, Wis. native had double-figures in points and rebounds in all four IHCC games in the tourney and was named to the All-Tournament team. He was also tabbed a first-team All-Region 11 pick.

Ricks, from Sylmar, Cal., finished his two-year IHCC career as one of the best three-point shooters ever at Indian Hills. He made 170 3-pointers in his career – 97 in his sophomore campaign – and just missed setting the single-season and career school records in that category.

Ricks averaged 11.2 points while not missing a game over the past two seasons. He was also a first-team All-Region selection.

McKay and Ricks are Indian Hills’ first All-American choices since Dwight Buycks was named to the first team and Dwight Hardy to the third team after the 2008-09 season.

Eight Warriors on All-Region Hoops Team

Ottumwa -- Gary Ricks, Jr. and Jameel McKay top a list of eight Indian Hills players who were named to the All-Region 11 basketball team.

Ricks and McKay were the Warriors’ first-team selections on the squad while Roderick Bobbitt, Dustin Hogue and Brandon Spearman were picked for the second team and D.J. Bennett, DeAndray Buckley and Michael Haynes were honorable mention choices.

Playing in all 70 IHCC games over the past two seasons, Ricks was one of the best three-point shooters in school history. He had a total of 170 3-pointers, three shy of the school record held by Dwight Hardy. His 97 3’s this year were five fewer that Hardy’s single-season record.

Ricks averaged in double figures in each season and had a career average of 11.2. He also led the team in free-throw percentage both years. He was named to the All-Region second team as a freshman.

McKay, a freshman and the other first-team choice, led Indian Hills in scoring (14.6) and rebounding (7.7) this season and was named to the All-Tournament team at last week’s NJCAA National Tournament. He had double figures in points and rebounds in each of IHCC’s four games at Hutch and his 50 rebounds led the tournament. He shot nearly 62% from the field for the season.

Bobbitt, also a freshman, had a solid national tournament, leading the tourney in assists with 24. He was the Warriors’ assists leader with a 6.0 average for the season and also led the team in steals with 107 while scoring 9.4 points a game. His season-best scoring output was 19 points against Southern Idaho at the national tourney.

Hogue capped his freshman campaign with a season-high 25 points in the seventh-place game against Wabash Valley last Saturday. His season averages were 11.1 points and 5.5 rebounds. He actually had more offensive rebounds than defensive boards.

In his only season as a Warrior, Spearman was second on the team in scoring at 11.7 points a game and was also second in 3-pointers with 53. His 29 points against Ellsworth CC were the most scored by an IHCC player in a game this season. He played his freshman season at the University of Dayton.

Bennett may have been the most improved player on this year’s Indian Hills team after playing sparingly as a freshman. He averaged 7.2 points and 4.6 rebounds and was the team leader in blocked shots with 63 while shooting .673 from the field. After scoring in double figures in only three of the first 25 games, Bennett scored 10 or more points in seven of the last 12 contests with a high game of 21.

Buckley, like Spearman, transferred from a Division I school – the University of New Hampshire. He averaged 5.6 points and 2.6 rebounds.

Haynes, a transfer from UTEP, had a 6.9 scoring average and provided 4.5 rebounds a game.

Joining Ricks and McKay on the All-Region first team were Devin Brooks and Xavier Munford from Iowa Western and Marshalltown’s Marcus Bell.

Iowa Western placed Kelvin Dixon and Alonzo Traylor on the second team and Marshalltown had Rashaad Brown-Peterson.

The honorable mention list includes Antonio Levy from Iowa Western and Keith Coleman, Nilson Santana and Derrick Stewart from Marshalltown, in addition to the three IHCC players.

McKay Named to All-Tournament Team

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills freshman Jameel McKay was named to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the NJCAA Division I Basketball Championship over the weekend.

McKay had double figures in points and rebounds in every one of IHCC’s four games at the national tourney, scoring a total of 61 points and grabbing 50 rebounds. His rebound total led the tournament and his point total tied for seventh-highest.

The Warriors won their final three games after losing their opening-round contest. Their seventh-place finish marked the seventh time in nine trips to the tournament that they have finished in the top seven.

McKay, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is one of only three freshmen on the 13-player All-Tournament team.

He was the leading scorer and rebounder for Indian Hills during the Warriors’ 33-4 season with averages of 14.6 points and 7.7 rebounds.

The 33 wins for Indian Hills represent the seventh time in school history the Warriors have won that many games in a season.

Victory Allows Warriors to Wind Up 7th

Hutchinson, Kan. -- The Indian Hills Warriors overcame the disappointment of an opening-round defeat at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament to win three straight games and finish 7th in the tourney.

Indian Hills won the battle of Warriors on Saturday, defeating the Wabash Valley (Ill) Warriors, 83-74, to claim the 7th-place finish.

IHCC came from behind with a 15-0 burst in the second half and went on to their 33rd win of the season. It's the 7th time in school history an IHCC team has won that many games and marks the 7th time in nine trips to the national tourney that Indian Hills has finished at least 7th.

Dustin Hogue keyed Indian Hills' string of 15 consecutive points, scoring seven points in the run. He made what was only his 6th three-pointer of the season and added four free throws. Hogue had a season-high 25 points to lead the IHCC scoring.

Jameel McKay had his 4th straight double-double of the tourney with 12 points and 12 rebounds. And Brandon Spearman, one of five IHCC players appearing in his final game for Indian Hills, had 18 points. He made seven straight free throws in the second half to go along with three 3-pointers.

Indian Hills jumped out to a 20-13 first-half lead on a three-point play by Hogue. WVC then scored 10 points in a row to go on top 23-20. There were four ties and an equal number of lead changes the rest of the half and the teams went to the locker room tied at 36.

With 14-and-a-half minutes to play, Wabash Valley enjoyed a 51-40 lead after a three-point play by Chasen Campbell. A Hogue free throw and a basket by McKay sparked the IHCC 15-0 run.

After a bucket by Wabash Valley, Spearman hit two foul shots and D.J. Bennett had a dunk and Indian Hills never led by fewer than six points the rest of the way.

A team that struggled at the free throw line all season long, Indian Hills saved one of their best free throw shooting games for the final contest of the season. They made 31-of-41 at the line and that, along with a 52-38 rebounding margin, allowed IHCC to claim the win.

Warriors Notch Wire-to-Wire Win

Hutchinson, Kan. -- Indian Hills assured itself of a top-8 finish in the 2012 NJCAA Division I Basketball Championship with a 92-82 win against Southern Idaho in the consolation round of the tourney on Friday.

The Warriors never trailed in advancing to play Wabash Valley (Ill) in the 7th-place game on Saturday.

A couple of huge second-half runs allowed Indian Hills to open up a 31-point lead in the second half. But the Warriors seemingly couldn't stand prosperity and allowed the Golden Eagles to cut the deficit to six at 86-80 with just over a minute to play.

Roderick Bobbitt, who had a season-high 19 points, made a pair of free throws with 57.4 seconds on the clock to give IHCC a little more breathing room and the Warriors closed out CSI with four more free throws.

In a game in which both teams were playing to get one more game in the tourney, Indian Hills jumped out to a quick 14-2 lead. Southern Idaho didn't score their first field goal until 5:20 had been played.

The Warriors took a ten-point halftime lead which ballooned to 73-42 in the first eight minutes of the second half. CSI, which entered the game with the same 31-4 record as Indian Hills, used a 21-5 run to get back in the game.

The Golden Eagles, the defending national champs, kept chipping away at the lead, but couldn't get closer than the late six-point deficit.

The Warriors won despite committing 27 turnovers and making only 54% of their 35 free throw attempts. They forced 31 CSI turnovers and IHCC was credited with 23 steals.

After Bobbitt's season-best 19 points, Jameel McKay scored 18 for Indian Hills. McKay led IHCC to a 43-31 rebounding advantage with 10 boards. It was the third straight tournament game in which McKay had double-digit points and rebounds totals.

Indian Hills Stays Alive With Win in Hutch

Hutchinson, Kan. -- Gary Ricks, Jr. ignited a 12-0 run with back-to-back three-pointers, then added another trey after a Roderick Bobbitt layup as Indian Hills ran off 11 points in less than a minute and kept its season alive with a 79-70 win against East Mississippi in the consolation bracket of the NJCAA Division I Basketball Championship.

Ricks' trio of 3s helped turn the game around after the Warriors had trailed for most of the first 23 minutes.

Except for 1:14 at the outset of the contest, East Mississippi led throughout the first half and for the first few minutes of the second half.

D.J. Bennett, who along with Jameel McKay led IHCC with 16 points, had consecutive field goals to start the second half. With the game tied at 37-all, Ricks found his three-point stroke. He buried two in a row and then a third to make it 48-37.

Ronnie Stevens added a free throw to complete Indian Hills' 12-0 run and the Warriors eventually built the lead to 16 points.

Bennett and McKay each had five field goals in the second half when IHCC outscored the Lions, 50-37.

The two teams combined for 64 fouls, the fourth highest total for two teams in a national tournament game.

There were also 84 free throws and 48 turnovers. The most important stat, however, was the Warriors' 31st win, which means they are still playing in the tournament, with their next game scheduled for Friday.

Warriors Fall to Monroe

Hutchinson, Kan. -- In a matchup of two teams with identical 30-3 records, Monroe (NY) College sent Indian Hills to the consolation bracket of the NJCAA Division I Basketball Championship with an 81-69 victory in the first round of the tourney.

Monroe broke away from an early 5-5 tie with 15 straight points. The Warriors were forced to play catchup after that. They got to within five points at halftime and were down 50-49 with 9:15 to play.

Brandon Spearman's attempt to give the Warriors the lead was off the mark and Monroe immediately went on a 12-1 run. Indian Hills got no closer than eight points after that.

The Warriors' chances were hurt by cold shooting -- 33% from the field and 58% from the free throw line.

Monroe guard Davon Marshall attempted 20 free throws, one more than the entire IHCC team. Marshall made 15 of his 20 foul shots and led all scorers with 34 points. Teammate Orlando Sanchez, who also played on last year's Monroe team that lost in the national semifinals, added 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Indian Hills got a double-double from Jameel McKay who scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Gary Ricks, Jr. nailed four 3s and had 12 points and Spearman had 11.

The Warriors will take on East Mississippi on Wednesday afternoon to try to extend their season.

On to Hutch! Warriors Blast Science

Ottumwa --- Playing in their first district title game in four years, the Indian Hills Warriors made the most of the opportunity by blistering visiting North Dakota State College of Science, 110-66, on Tuesday night to secure a spot in next week's NJCAA national tournament.

It will be the school's ninth trip to the national tourney and the first since the 2008 team finished 6th.

The Warriors showed no ill effects after a six-day layoff since clinching the Region 11 postseason title as they jumped on Science early. Eight different players scored points as the Warriors rolled to a quick 20-6 lead.

From there, the margin continued to grow as an inability to handle the IHCC pressure defense doomed the Wildcats' chances. They had 17 turnovers in the first half and 14 more in the second half.

A pair of free throws by Ronnie Stevens gave IHCC its first 20-point lead at 31-11 and Gary Ricks, Jr. ended a big first half with his 4th 3-pointer to send the Warriors off at halftime with a 28-point lead.

Any thoughts that NDSCS (27-5) may have had about getting back into the game in the second half quickly vanished as the determined Warriors ran off nine straight points to open the last half to build the lead to 72-35.

The lead was as large as 50 points late in the game with the Warriors cruising to their 30th win of the season against only three losses.

Six IHCC players scored in double figures, led by Ricks with 18. He added one more three in the second half and his five for the game give him 83 for the season and 155 for his career.

D.J. Bennett continued his late-season surge for the Warriors with 17 points. After scoring in double figures only three times in the first 25 games, Bennett has had 10 or more points in six of the last eight games.

Greg Tucker had 19 points to lead Science, 17 of those coming in the second half.

The Warriors have won their three postseason games by an average of nearly 25 points. They will begin play at the national tourney on Tuesday, March 20, against Monroe College, a team from New York with an identical 30-3 record.

Warriors Grab Region 11 Title

Council Bluffs, IA -- The Indian Hills Warriors picked up a Region 11 postseason championship to go along with their regular-season region title on Wednesday night when the ninth-ranked Warriors pulled away at the end to knock off Iowa Western, 87-70, and sweep the best-of-three Region 11 series with the Reivers.

For the season, the Warriors won all four matchups with Iowa Western and left little doubt as to their supremacy in the region. They were the only team to defeat Iowa Western on its home floor, beating them in both the regular season and postseason.

The pivotal moment in Wednesday's game came with under seven minutes to play in the second half. Iowa Western had stormed back after trailing by as many as 16 points in the second half to cut the deficit to two at 68-66.

Devin Brooks' 3-pointer got the home team to within two and, after a stop, the Reivers' Alonzo Traylor missed a chance to tie the score when he couldn't hit a shot from right in front of the rim.

IHCC got the rebound and Roderick Bobbitt found Gary Ricks, Jr. in the corner and Ricks buried a three while being fouled. He added the free throw for a huge four-point play. On the next Warrior possession Ricks curled in another three to make it 75-66 and the Reivers didn't get closer than six points after that.

Indian Hills scored the last ten points to make the final margin a little deceiving, but there was nothing deceiving about the Warriors' 19-4 run over the final 6:07.

The Warriors got a big night from sophomore center D.J. Bennett. He had 14 points in the first half and 18 for the game, to go along with 12 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Indian Hills got a big night from another sophomore, Brandon Spearman, who drilled three 3s in the second half when he scored 11 of his 13 points.

Ricks had 17 points and in addition to his heroics in the second half, the other holdover from last year's IHCC team -- along with Bennett -- he capped a 15-0 run to end the first half with a buzzer-beating floater from the lane.

Iowa Western outscored the Warriors 14-2 to take a 34-30 lead. Ricks provided IHCC with a spark with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one and that started Indian Hills' run of 15 straight points.

Bennett had four points in that span and Jameel McKay and Bobbitt each had a three-point play.

The game was tight early with five ties and nine lead changes. Iowa Western rallied behind the play of Antonio Levy who had eight of the points in the 14-2 run.

Levy had 15 points. Xavier Munford led Iowa Western with 24, 20 of them in the second half. He had three straight baskets as the Reivers came back after trailing 55-39 with 14:47 to play.

Brooks twice brought IWCC to within two, but the Warriors helf off the Reivers to win their 29th game of the season and a spot in next Tuesday's District 11 title game against North Dakota State College of Science, the 11th-ranked team in the latest NJCAA poll.

NDSCS earned the spot opposite the Warriors with a 100-92 win over Williston (ND) State in overtime on Wednesday night.

McKay Helps Warriors Take First Step

Ottumwa -- Freshman Jameel McKay ignited a 21-6 second-half run with one of his eight field goals in the half and the Indian Hills Warriors stayed unbeaten at home with an 81-68 win over Iowa Western in the first game of the best-of-three Region 11 championship series.

McKay's basket came after Iowa Western's Wil Martinez hit a 3-pointer with just under eight minutes remaining to bring the Reivers to within three at 56-53. The goal by Martinez represented the only bench points the entire game for Iowa Western, whose bench was outscored by the Warriors' reserves, 25-3.

McKay had a season-high 26 points, 17 of them in the second half, and also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Devin Brooks, Antonio Levy and Alonzo Traylor combined for 60 of the Reivers' 68 points. Iowa Western's season scoring leader, Xavier Munford, was held to five points, about 12 under his average.

Gary Ricks, Jr. hit consecutive 3s in the first half to give IHCC a lead it would never relinquish. McKay followed the triples with a field goal and Indian Hills had used a quick 8-0 burst to go ahead, 14-8.

With Iowa Western down 25-22, the Warriors went on a 14-4 run to take their biggest lead of the first half. Five different IHCC players scored in that run which was capped by a three by Roderick Bobbitt.

After Indian Hills took a 41-35 halftime lead, both teams really struggled offensively at the outset of the second half. Neither scored for almost three minutes with a flurry of missed shots and turnovers plaguing both teams.

Brooks finally broke the ice for Iowa Western, but McKay quickly answered for the Warriors.

McKay's teammates did a great job of setting him up for easy buckets in the second half. Brandon Spearman fed him for a dunk and a six-point lead, right before Martinez's three-pointer. Then, during the game-deciding run, Bobbitt got a steal and led McKay with a perfect pass for a fast-break jam.

Bobbitt added 15 points for the Warriors. Brooks led the Reivers with 25.

The series resumes in Council Bluffs on Wednesday night. The Reivers have lost only once on their homecourt this season, a 91-85 loss to Indian Hills in late January.

Regular Season Ends with Win in Chicago

Chicago, IL -- The Indian Hills Warriors can now start making preparations for the postseason after concluding their 30-game regular season schedule with an 80-72 win against Kennedy-King College on Saturday.

Jameel McKay, who led the Warriors with 22 points, scored six straight points early in the second half as part of a 9-0 run to help IHCC turn the game around.

The Warriors trailed 38-36 at the half, but ran off the nine consecutive points after Kennedy-King's Jamal Dantzler hit a pair of free throws to open the second-half scoring.

Dantzler had 25 points to lead all scorers.

Once IHCC took the lead at 45-40 on a Ronnie Stevens tip-in, the Statesmen were eventually able to get to within a point at 49-48 on two free throws by Demarko Nash, who scored 21 points.

One of McKay's eight second-half field goals was followed by a three-pointer by Brandon Spearman and the lead was back to six.

Kennedy-King was held to just two field goals in the first ten minutes of the second half and only made seven the entire half. They managed to stay close with 26-of-33 free throw shooting.

The game was a homecoming of sorts for the four IHCC players -- Spearman, D.J. Bennett, Kieran Woods and Michael Haynes -- from the Chicago area. It was the first game in Chicago for an Indian Hills team in seven years.

The Warriors will get next week off in preparation for the best-of-three series to determine the Region 11 postseason champion. Marshalltown will travel to play Iowa Western on Thursday night and the winner of that game will be the Warriors' opponent in the series.

By virtue of winning the regular season Region 11 title, Indian Hills has the homecourt advantage in the title series. They will host either MCC or IWCC on Monday, Mar. 5, in game one.

Warriors Hang on to Knock Off State Fair

Ottumwa -- On a night when there were 22 three-pointers made by the two teams, it was a missed three-point try that allowed Indian Hills to escape with an 85-82 win against State Fair on Wednesday night in the Warriors' final regular-season home game.

Antonin Galaya of State Fair had made eight 3s in the game, but his attempt from behind the arc that would have tied the score with three seconds left was off the mark. IHCC's Roderick Bobbitt secured the rebound and Indian Hills survived some terrible free-throw shooting down the stretch to notch their 26th win of the year.

The Warriors had ample opportunities to put the game away in the second half after taking control with a 14-0 run. But the Roadrunners kept fighting back on the strength of the strong all-around play of sophomore Alfonzo Houston and the long-range shooting of Galaya.

Galaya's 7th three of the game with under two minutes to play cut what was once a double-digit IHCC lead to 83-75. After a made IHCC free throw, a rare occurrence in the final minutes of the game when they missed seven of eight attempts, Houston scored and Galaya nailed another three to make it 85-80.

IHCC missed a shot and Ayo Ojo of State Fair went to the line with 12.9 seconds to play. He missed both free throws, but Houston rebounded the second miss and was fouled while putting the ball in from underneath the goal to make it 85-82 with 10.7 seconds to play.

Houston's foul shot was no good, but again State Fair got the offensive rebound and, still down three points, eventually worked the ball to Galaya whose contested three-point try wouldn't drop.

Each team had 11 3s and it was three in a row in the first half by the Warriors' Bobbit that sparked one of three big IHCC scoring runs in the game.

Bobbitt drilled the trio of 3s to bring Indian Hills back from a 19-15 deficit into a 31-19 lead.

Houston scored four straight points and Galaya made three treys as the Roadrunners responded with 15 points in a row to regain the lead at 34-31.

Brandon Spearman's 3 immediately tied the game for the Warriors and started an 11-1 run at the end of the first half.

A pair of baskets by D.J. Bennett started the second-half scoring and gave IHCC another double-figure lead. State Fair once again answered with a run of their own to go ahead 52-50 on Houston's three-point play.

Jameel McKay tied the game at 52-all for the Warriors, the start of 14 consecutive points that shot IHCC into a 64-52 lead.

The largest lead for Indian Hills came shortly after that, a 13-point advantage with just under 10 minutes to play.

Lucas Kidane -- who scored all of his 15 points in the second half -- along with Houston and Galaya triggered the State Fair comeback that eventually got them a chance to tie the score in the final seconds.

Indian Hills won despite making only 14-of-34 free throws, 13-of-29 in the second half. State Fair didn't help their chances with 7-of-19 free-throw shooting.

Bobbitt had a season-high 18 points to share team scoring honors with McKay. Bobbitt and Michael Haynes had 10 rebounds and McKay nine. Houston had 28 points and Galaya 24 for State Fair, which suffered its seventh loss in a row.

The regular-season finale for the Warriors will be Saturday against Kennedy-King in Chicago at 3 p.m. They don't start postseason play until Mar. 5 in the first game of the best-of-three Region 11 championship series. They will take on the winner of the first-round game between Marshalltown and Iowa Western in the series.

Spearman's Free Throw Clinches Confererence Crown

Ottumwa -- A free throw by Brandon Spearman with 5.9 seconds to play proved to be the difference as the Indian Hills Warriors completed an undefeated conference season with a 75-74 win against Iowa Western on Saturday night.

Spearman's game-winning foul shot came after a steal by Roderick Bobbitt, who then fed Spearman for a driving layup attempt.

Bobbitt's steal followed a putback basket by Gary Ricks, Jr. with just under ten seconds remaining that tied the score at 74.

The win was the fourth straight in the conference for IHCC and means they will get a bye in the first round of the postseason and will have home court advantage in the best-of-three series to determine the Region 11 postseason champ. That series will begin on March 5.

Iowa Western had gone ahead 74-72 with under a minute to play when first Kelvin Dixon and then Alonzo Traylor hit a pair of free throws.

Those four foul shots wiped out an Indian Hills lead of 72-70 which came on a Dustin Hogue field goal on a pass from Ricks with a little over a minute to play.

The Reivers battled back from a 70-60 deficit with 10 straight points, the last six coming on Xavier Munford's fourth 3-pointer, and third of the second half, and a three-point play by Traylor.

Traylor led all scorers with 22 points and Munford added 16.

Indian Hills used a 17-4 run over about a six-minute span and apparently took control of the game at that point. They still owned a double-digit lead after a Ronnie Stevens' tip-in built the ten-point advantage at 70-60 with 5 1/2 minutes to play.

But the Warriors then went over four minutes without a point while Iowa Western was rallying for the 70-all deadlock.

Spearman led IHCC with 17 points. It was his hot shooting early that allowed Indian Hills to grab an 11-3 lead in the opening minutes.

The Reivers then scored ten unanswered points to take their first lead of the night and ended the first half with eight consecutive points to go ahead 38-30 at the half.

The Warriors helped to turn things around with some tenacious defense in the second half. And their final steal of the night came on the Reivers' final possession.

After Spearman's free throw made it a one-point game, Iowa Western had the ball knocked loose in their backcourt as they tried to advance the ball for a potential game-winning shot. Jameel McKay corralled the loose ball and the Warriors celebrated their 25th win of the season.

Indian Hills will end the regular-season schedule with a pair of games this week. They will host State Fair CC on Wednesday in the last home game before the postseason and then travel to Chicago to take on Kennedy-King on Saturday.

Moberly Hands Warriors Road Loss

Moberly, Mo. -- For the third time, Indian Hills lost to a team that they had defeated by a double-digit margin earlier in the season. This time it was Moberly Area Community College that played the role of avenger, downing the Warriors, 93-79, on Tuesday night.

Moberly jumped on the Warriors early, building a 22-point lead in the first half. The Greyhounds were up by 18 at the half and the closest IHCC got in the second half was eight points.

The 93 points scored by Moberly were the most given up by the Warriors this year.

Frank Williams' three-pointer with 6:30 to play moved the Warriors to within 69-61. But Daylen Robinson hit field goals on consecutive possessions as the Greyhounds quickly moved the lead back to double digits and Indian Hills was never that close again.

Robinson led the Greyhounds with 21 points, hitting 12-of-15 free throws, including his last nine in a row. He got plenty of help with four other players in double figures.

D.J. Bennett was the lone bright spot for Indian Hills. He followed up his career-best 12-point night against Marshalltown in the Warriors' last game with an even better performance. The sophomore center had 21 points and eight rebounds.

Moberly raced out to an early 17-5 advantage, scoring nine straight points to take the big lead. And it would only get worse for the sixth-ranked Warriors who trailed at halftime for the first time all season.

The Greyhounds used a 31-12 run to blow the game open. The Warriors had a hard time stopping the Moberly attack and an even harder time getting much from their own offense. They didn't make a three-pointer in the first half and shot only five free throws.

Jameel McKay did provide a double-double for the Warriors with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Indian Hills will face Iowa Western this Saturday night in the Warriors' final conference game. A win would give IHCC home court advantage for the Region 11 postseason tournament.

Still Unbeaten in the League, Warriors Maul MCC

Ottumwa --- This one was over early. Indian Hills opened up a 15-point lead just over halfway through the first half, led by 23 at intermission and expanded the margin to as many as 36 points in the second half on the way to a 77-46 rout of Marshalltown Community College at the Hellyer Center on Saturday night.

It was the third win without a loss in Region 11 play for Indian Hills and leaves MCC winless in three league games.

The points allowed were the fewest scored by an IHCC opponent this year and the lowest point total for Marshalltown.

The visiting Tigers suffered through a miserable night shooting -- they were 19-of-66 from the field (29%), missed all 15 of their 3-point tries, and hit only 8-of-24 free throw attempts. In addition, they were forced into 24 turnovers.

Indian Hills scored the first five points of the game. Marshalltown answered with back-to-back field goals, but that was the only offense the Tigers could muster in the first nine minutes.

The Warriors ran off nine straight points on a layup by Rawane Ndiaye, a three by Gary Ricks, Jr. and consecutive baskets by D.J. Bennett.

The 3-pointer was the first of four in the opening half for Ricks who increased his season total to 65 and career mark to 138. He didn't score in the second half, but tied Bennett for team scoring honors.

Bennett had a season-high 12 points and matched his career high.

With just over four minutes to play in the first half, Ricks had 12 points and Bennett had 10 while MCC had scored only 11 total.

The Warriors limited MCC to just 16 points in the first half, taking a 39-16 lead at halftime. The largest lead for IHCC was 36 points.

Indian Hills will play a road contest at Moberly (Mo.) on Tuesday night and then return home to wrap up conference play against Iowa Western next Saturday night.
