Ottumwa -- Michael Haynes, a key contributor on last year's Indian Hills national tournament basketball team, was killed Thursday in a shooting in his hometown of Chicago.
According to news reports, Haynes was shot when he tried to break up a fight between neighborhood friends over a necklace. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The 22-year old Haynes had signed a letter-of-intent with Iona College in New York and reportedly was set to move there next week.
"We're shocked and deeply saddened by this news," said Indian Hills coach Barret Peery, who had recruited Haynes to be a part of his first team at IHCC prior to the 2011-12 season. "Michael was such a great kid and great member of our team," Peery said. "He was a popular guy who absolutely loved being a part of this family."
Haynes averaged 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds in his only season with Indian Hills. He played in 31 games and started 11. The 6-foot-7-inch power forward came to Indian Hills after attending the University of Texas-El Paso.
"Michael had a bright future," Peery added. "He had done everything to give himself the opportunity to continue his education and career. It's a sad end to the story."

Mickeal to Return to IHCC
Ottumwa -- Former Indian Hills Community College basketball All-American and Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Pete Mickeal will be honored at a special event on the IHCC campus on Friday, July 27.
Mickeal was a member of the first-ever Hall of Fame class at Indian Hills, but was unable to attend the induction ceremony last February. He had a good excuse, though. He was busy playing in his third season with FC Barcelona in Spain.
The Rock Island, Ill. native will return to the Midwest this month and will come to Ottumwa to receive his Hall of Fame award. The special induction ceremony will take place in Warrior Junction in the Advanced Technology Center on the IHCC Ottumwa campus. The event will run from 4 – 6 p.m. Mickeal will be presented his Hall of Fame crystal and there will be an opportunity to visit with the former IHCC star.
Mickeal was a first-team All-American for the Warriors in 1998, a year in which he was also named the national Player of the Year and the MVP at the national tournament. He is the second-leading scorer in school history.
After playing on back-to-back national championship teams at Indian Hills, Mickeal went to the University of Cincinnati where he was a first-team all-conference choice both years he played for the Bearcats.
Mickeal recently finished his third season with FC Barcelona, helping them to a spot in the Euroleague Final Four and a third-place finish in the tourney. In his initial season in Spain in 2009-10, Mickeal’s FC Barcelona team won the Euroleague title as well as the Spanish League crown.
A knee injury cut short Mickeal’s 2010-11 season, but he came back strong this past season when FC Barcelona had the most wins in the Euroleague and the Spanish League.
Mickeal has had a long and distinguished professional basketball career, playing in five different foreign countries following a stint in the American Basketball Association.

Hoops Camp Dates are Set
OTTUMWA – Indian Hills Community College basketball coach Barret Peery has set the dates for his summer instructional camp. It will be held from July 30 through August 2 in the Hellyer Student Life Center on the IHCC Ottumwa campus and is for boys and girls ages 5-13. The camp will run from 8am to noon each day and the cost to attend is $60.
There will be both daily and weekly awards given to the campers. The coaching and instruction will be provided by coach Peery, his staff and current Indian Hills players.

Haynes Goes From Iowa to Iona
Ottumwa -- Michael Haynes has become the fifth member of this past season's Indian Hills basketball team to find an NCAA Division I home for next year. Haynes has committed to Iona College in New York.
Haynes, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound power forward from Chicago, played one season for Indian Hills, averaging 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds a game. His high game of 17 points came in the season-opener against Indiana-Dabney. He was an honorable mention all-region pick.
Iona is coming off a 25-8 season in which it made it to the NCAA Tournament. The Gaels lost to BYU in the first round of the tourney.

IHCC's Buckley Headed Back to Michigan
Ottumwa -- Indian Hills sophomore DeAndray Buckley has signed a letter of intent with Central Michigan University. Buckley, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound wing, played this past season for the Warriors after spending his freshman year at the University of New Hampshire.
Buckley, a native of Detroit, was one of the captains on this year's IHCC squad. He averaged 5.6 points and 2.6 rebounds. He missed six games in January and February with a knew injury and the injury forced him to sit out three postseason games as well. But he returned to the lineup and played the final three games in the national tournament scoring 16 points in those contests, including nine against Southern Idaho.
Buckley was an honorable mention all-region choice in his lone season at IHCC.
Central Michigan earlier hired former Drake University head coach Keno Davis as its new coach. And Davis is happy to add Buckley to the roster for his first team. "DeAndray has been a leader both on and off the court at two storied programs -- Romulus High School and Indian Hills," said Davis. "His combination of toughness, high basketball IQ and outstanding academic record make him a great fit for our program."
In high school, Buckley was part of a school-record 79 victories in four years and played in two state semifinals. He averaged over 15 points and nine rebounds as a senior.

Spearman to Play in Hawaii
Ottumwa -- Indian Hills guard Brandon Spearman has signed a letter of intent with the University of Hawaii. Spearman, a Chicago native, played one season at IHCC after transferring from Dayton.
Spearman quickly established himself as a team leader for the Warriors and was the second-leading scorer at 11.7 points a game. He played in all 37 games and started more games -- 30 -- than anyone else on the roster.
He was second on the Warriors in 3-pointers with 53 and his 29 points against Ellsworth CC were the most scored by an IHCC player in a game this season.

Ricks Signs with Drake
Ottumwa -- Gary Ricks, Jr., a Southern California guy who started his college basketball career in Iowa, will stay in the state to continue his education and career. Ricks, a native of Sylmar, Cal., has signed a letter of intent with Drake University.
Ricks earned Honorable Mention All-American honors after a sophomore season in which he led Indian Hills to a seventh-place finish at the NJCAA national tournament and a 33-4 record. He averaged 10.0 points a game, led the team in free throw percentage (.732) and three-pointers (97) and was a second-team All-Region choice.
Playing in all 70 IHCC games over the past two seasons, Ricks was one of the best three-point shooters in school history. He had a total of 170 3s, three shy of the school record held by Dwight Hardy. His 97 threes this year were five fewer than Hardy's single-season record.
Ricks had a career scoring average of 11.2 and led the team in free throw percentage as a freshman as well, shooting .807 from the line. His two-year three-point field goal percentage was .424.
Drake coach Mark Phelps said, "Gary is one of the top shooters in the country. He brings maturity and leadership to our team at the guard position."
"He is a winner who will improve all aspects of our guard play next year. We are extremely excited about his joining our family."
