Park Hills, Mo. -- A scoring drought at the start of the second half that lasted for nearly nine minutes was too much to overcome as the Indian Hills Warriors dropped a 55-47 decision to No. 3-ranked Three Rivers at the Bob Sechrest Classic on Friday night.
Three Rivers (5-1) took a 28-21 lead into the second half and built the advantage to 37-21 before Aaron Austin's field goal at the 11:11 mark gave the Warriors their first points of the half. Marquise Carter followed with a three-pointer for the Raiders and TRCC had its biggest lead of the game at 40-23.
IHCC was finally able to generate some offense after the Carter trey started a 20-7 run for the Warriors (5-2). Dijon Farr, who had begun the spurt with a three, made a two-point goal to bring the Warriors to within four at 47-43.
Three Rivers then went inside to their backup post player, Aloysius Henry, on two straight possessions and he scored both times to build the lead back to eight points and IHCC didn't get closer than six after that.
Twenty-four turnovers and 10-of-22 free throw shooting were big reasons why the Warriors weren't able to complete the comeback try. IHCC was only 3-of-10 at the foul line in the second half.
After trailing early, the Warriors tied the score on a three-pointer by Aaron Austin and grabbed a brief lead on a Brian Wilson free throw. But that was the last time that Indian Hills would have a lead.
Three Rivers took their largest lead of the opening half at 24-15 before Farr hit consecutive field goals to cut the lead to four points. Farr led the IHCC scoring with 14 points. Austin joined him in double figures with 10.
Carter had a game-high 18 for Three Rivers.
Indian Hills will try to bounce back from the loss in the final game of the classic on Saturday night against host school Mineral Area.

Life on the Road Not So Good for IHCC
Cedar Rapids, IA --After winning their first five games of the season, all on their home court, the Indian Hills Warriors went on the road for the first time Tuesday and found out how difficult life away from home can be. The Warriors dropped a 66-55 decision to Kirkwood CC in a game in which IHCC didn't lead after the first six minutes of the first half.
Kirkwood's Brandon Pullman came off the bench to hit a three-pointer to give the Eagles the lead at 10-9, and then followed with a layup. The Warriors forged two ties, at 16-all and 18-all, but never led again on the way to their first loss of the year.
Larry Stone tried to keep the Warriors in the game in the opening half. The 5-7 guard scored nine straight points in one stretch. His fourth straight field goal brought the Warriors to within four points, but Pullman and Jordan Stoermer hit consecutive three-pointers for Kirkwood to help the Eagles grab their first double-digit lead with just over four minutes left in the half.
When Kaylon Williams scored right before the buzzer at the end of the half, Kirkwood took a ten-point lead to the lockerroom. The Warriors weren't able to get closer than six points in the second half.
Aaron Austin had back-to-back baskets to bring IHCC within six at 48-42 seven minutes into the second half. But the Warriors couldn't score on two straight possessions after that with a chance to reduce the deficit even further.
Austin fouled out with 6:51 to play. He tied Stone for team scoring honors with 14. Dwan McMillan added 13 points for Indian Hills.
Stoermer led all scorers with 15 for Kirkwood.
The Warriors failed to get much production from their big men. The guard trio of Austin, Stone and McMillan combined for 41 of IHCC's 55 points.

The Great Escape: Warriors Pull Out Another Win
Ottumwa -- It was quite a weekend for the Indian Hills basketball team. Friday night, they made up an 11-point deficit and came from behind to knock off Kennedy-King in their first game of the Klyn Automotive Classic. Saturday night, it took similar late-game heroics to allow the Warriors to stay undefeated.
Dwan McMillan scored six points in the final 33 seconds and the Warriors held off Ellsworth CC to win 83-79 at the Hellyer Center. McMillan's superb scoop shot allowed the Warriors to go ahead 79-78 with 13.8 seconds to play, just seconds after Ellsworth's L.C. Doss had drilled a three-pointer to put the Panthers ahead by one.
McMillan was fouled on his layup and made the free throw to complete the three-point play at make it 80-78. The Warriors then fouled Doss before he could launch another three and he made the first shot of a one-and-one. When he missed the second attempt, IHCC's Dijon Farr rebounded and was immediately fouled.
Farr made the first foul shot and missed the second to leave the score at 81-79 Indian Hills. Ellsworth grabbed the rebound after the missed free throw and called time out, a time out they didn't have. That resulted in a technical foul and McMillan made both free throws to provide the final margin.
The second half featured scoring runs by both teams. Ellsworth started the final 20 minutes with a 15-2 spurt to ahead 50-49. Bill Freeman, ECC's scoring leader, who was scoreless in the first half, hit two threes to fuel the Ellsworth run.
Freeman's second three put the Panthers ahead by a point, but Bruno Ferreira of Indian Hills scored consecutive baskets to begin a ten-point run for the Warriors. At the end of that run, IHCC was on top 59-50.
Ellsworth slowly cut into the deficit though. Freeman hit a free throw with a minute left to make it 76-72 and, after an Indian Hills turnover, he buried a three to make it a one-point game. McMillan's foul shot with 32.8 seconds remaining gave IHCC a short-lived lead before Doss nailed his three-pointer for Ellsworth's final lead.
Indian Hills ran away to a 15-point first-half lead and was ahead by 12 at halftime. Indian Hills had four 3's in the opening half, from four different players and, after making only 4-of-16 free throws the night before, hit 9-of 13 at the line. McMillan and Garrett combined to score 22 points in the half. John Wolfe came off the bench for Ellsworth to score 10 in the first half and he wound up with 14 points.
Doss led all scorers with 22, one more than Garrett scored for Indian Hills.
With the win, IHCC ended an unbeaten five-game homestand to start the season. The Warriors now embark on a very tough stretch of three road games in five days, starting with a trip to Kirkwood CC on Tuesday night.

Warriors Clamp Down On Kennedy-King For Comeback Win
Ottumwa -- Indian Hills held visiting Kennedy-King College without a point over the final six minutes of the game and, although they scored only seven points in that span, it was enough to get the Warriors their fourth straight win to start the season.
Dwan McMillan's free throw with 4:12 to play put the Warriors on top, 55-54, and McMillan scored on a drive with 1:18 remaining for the final points in a 57-54 IHCC win.
Kennedy-King led by as many as 11 points in the first half and by seven at halftime. The Statesmen got back-to-back field goals to take a 54-50 lead with over six minutes to play, but went scoreless the rest of the game. Still, they had a chance to tie in the waning seconds, but Jeremy Lee missed a three-point try and the Statesmen missed on a couple of tip-in tries.
McMillan had cut the KKC lead in half at 54-52 before the Warriors' Dijon Farr tied the score with a basket at the 5:10 mark of the second half. From there, both teams struggled offensively.
Byron Board of KKC had a one-and-one opportunity with 4:41 left, but missed the first free throw. McMillan was good on one of his two free throws 29 seconds later for what proved to be the game-winning point.
Kennedy-King used a 16-2 run to open up a 32-21 first-half lead. Reggie Smith, who led all scorers with 21 points, hit three straight field goals in that stretch, part of a 15-point first half for the KKC sophomore. Brandon Garrett's putback for the Warriors made it a seven-point game at halftime.
McMillan and Garrett had consecutive field goals to start the second half for IHCC. Smith drilled two straight threes not long after that, but he wouldn't score again thanks to some strong defensive play by IHCC's Aaron Austin.
Garrett tied the score at 48-all, Lee gave KKC a brief two-point lead, and Austin evened the score at 50, setting the stage for the tense final eight minutes of play.
Farr led Indian Hills with 19 points and McMillan added 15 and Austin 12. Smith was the only player in double figures for the Statesmen.
Indian Hills won despite a dismal night at the free-throw line where they made only 4 of 16 attempts. Kennedy-King shot only six free throws and made only two.
Indian Hills will take on undefeated Ellsworth CC on Saturday night.

Warriors Use Second-Half Run to Put Away Highland
Ottumwa -- Indian Hills scored nine quick points to open the second half, eventually built the lead to 19 and then held off a late charge by Highland CC to stay perfect through the first three games of the season. IHCC beat Highland, 66-52, in the final game of the Jack Blackwell Tire Company Classic on Saturday night.
The win was the third straight to start the season for the Warriors, who don't play again until they host the Klyn Automotive Classic next weekend at the Hellyer Center.
The Warriors took a halftime lead thanks to some late first-half heroics by 5-7 guard Larry Stone. With IHCC clinging to a one-point lead, Stone was fouled on a three-point field goal attempt. He made all three shots and then followed with two more free throws less than a minute later to put the Warriors up, 30-24. After consecutive baskets by Highland, Stone ended the first-half scoring with a three to send IHCC off at the half leading 33-28.
Indian Hills continued the run to start the second half. Brandon Garrett had two straight field goals, Aaron Austin and Dijon Farr combined to make three free throws and the Warriors got another field goal to build the lead to 42-28. Abel Tillman finally got Highland's first points of the half on a field goal over four minutes into the half, but the Warriors continued to get strong play from Garrett and Austin to go ahead 59-40.
The Cougars showed signs of life with a 10-0 spurt to cut the deficit to nine, but Garrett answered with a three-point play and a layup and that finished off Highland.
Garrett had 15 of his team-high 17 points in the final half to lead the IHCC scoring. Stone had 14 and Austin 11. Highland got 10 points from both Tillman and Tim Steed.
Indian Hills enjoyed a big advantage from the free throw line where they made 24-of-37, compared to just 9-of-13 by Highland.

He made all three shots and then followed with two more free throws less than a minute later to put the Warriors up, 30-24. After consecutive baskets by Highland, Stone ended the first-half scoring with a three to send IHCC off at the half leading 33-28.
Indian Hills continued the run to start the second half. Brandon Garrett had two straight field goals, Aaron Austin and Dijon Farr combined to make three free throws and the Warriors got another field goal to build the lead to 42-28. Abel Tillman finally got Highland's first points of the half on a field goal over four minutes into the half, but the Warriors continued to get strong play from Garrett and Austin to go ahead 59-40.
The Cougars showed signs of life with a 10-0 spurt to cut the deficit to nine, but Garrett answered with a three-point play and a layup and that finished off Highland.
Garrett had 15 of his team-high 17 points in the final half to lead the IHCC scoring. Stone had 14 and Austin 11. Highland got 10 points from both Tillman and Tim Steed.
Indian Hills enjoyed a big advantage from the free throw line where they made 24-of-37, compared to just 9-of-13 by Highland.

Austin Leads IHCC Past Lee
Ottumwa -- Led by 19 points from Aaron Austin, 15 of them in the first half, Indian Hills defeated Lee College, 83-59, on the first night of the Jack Blackwell Tire Company Classic at the Hellyer Center Friday night. The win was the second in a row to start the season for the Warriors.
The visitors from Baytown, Texas had three early leads, before Indian Hills went ahead for good with a burst midway through the opening half that was fueled by Austin and Dijon Farr.
Indian Hills opened up a nine-point advantage at 33-24. Lee came back with consecutive field goals to make it a five-point game, but they didn't get any closer than that the rest of the night. The Warriors closed the half with a three-pointer by Farr, his third of the half, and a pair of free throws by Austin to take an 11-point lead at intermission.
The Warriors then scored six quick points on a basket by Bruno Ferreira and two by Brandon Garrett to start the second half and coasted home from there.
Indian Hills was able to frustrate Lee with an aggressive trapping defense. IHCC was credited with 10 steals, three by Austin.
Indian Hills' largest lead was 26 points and Ferreira scored eight of his 13 points in the final minutes to keep the Warriors comfortably ahead.
After Austin's game-high 19 points for IHCC, Farr added 17. Antone Byrd scored 16 to pace the Rebels.
Indian Hills will take on Highland CC in the final game of the Classic on Saturday night.

Warriors Romp in Opener
Ottumwa, IA -- Indian Hills rolled to a 25-point halftime lead and routed visiting Carl Sandburg College, 91-51, at the Hellyer Student Life Center Tuesday night in the season-opener for both teams. Jeff Kidder, starting his 5th season as head coach of the Warriors, has a brand new roster made up of six sophomore transfers and nine freshmen. And it was a chance for all 10 players who saw action to get acclimated to IHCC basketball in a game that was decided very early in the first half.
One of the talented IHCC freshmen, Dijon Farr, helped get the Warriors off to a quick start with back-to-back three-pointers, the second of which made the score 9-2. Indian Hills had their first double-digit lead when Brandon Garrett hit a pair of free throws to push the advantage to 11 at 18-7. From there the lead steadily grew to as many as 28 points in the first half. Carl Sandburg didn't hit double figures as a team until just over three minutes remained in the half.
The halftime score was 41-16.
IHCC expanded the lead to 40 points at 60-20 early in the final half and led by as many as 47 points twice before settling for the 40-point final margin.
The Warriors showed they may have a pretty good outside shooting attack, hitting 11 3s on the night. Four of those came from Larry Stone who led the IHCC scoring with 20 points. Farr added 15 and Derrick Hill had 12. Both Farr and Hill had three treys.
Jo-Paul Jones scored all 15 of his team-leading points for Carl Sandburg in the second half.
All 10 of the Indian Hills players who played had at least one field goal.
The competition will get a lot tougher for the Warriors this weekend when they host the Jack Blackwell Tire Company Classic. IHCC will take on Lee College on Friday night and perennial power Highland Community College from Freeport, Illinois on Saturday night.
