OTTUMWA --- Indian Hills has picked up another top-five national ranking as the Warriors make final preparations for their season opener on Friday. Basketball Times has the Warriors number-two in their junior college Dandy Dozen preseason ratings. The magazine, with its November issue available at newsstands now, has been in existence for over three decades and is one of the most trusted sources of basketball news.
Tony Jimenez, a long-time follower of junior college hoops who wrote that section, described this year’s Indian Hills team as having a “deep roster led by 6-8 Jameel McKay and (6-4) Ronald Ross.”
McKay is number-three on the publication’s list of Super Sophomores, described as a “multi-talented player committed to Marquette.”
Northwest Florida State, whom Basketball Times reports has five of its top seven players are transfers, is ranked first and Iowa Western is fifth.
The Warriors were rated fifth in the NJCAA preseason poll that came out last week.

Coach Peery Radio Show to Debut
OTTUMWA --- Indian Hills Community College basketball coach Barret Peery will be featured on a regular weekly radio show again this season, beginning Thursday, Nov. 1.
The show will air at 5:00 p.m. each Thursday on KMGO Radio (98.7 FM) and will be broadcast live from Appanoose Rapids Brewing Company in downtown Ottumwa. Edwin Brand from KMGO will host the weekly program.
Coach Peery will talk about IHCC basketball and answer questions from fans at the restaurant as well as those listening on the radio or on the internet (www.kmgo.com).
The Warriors open the season at home this weekend in the Blackwell Tire Classic with games against Carl Sandburg (Ill.) on Friday and Kirkwood CC Saturday.

Warriors Ranked 5th in Preseason Poll
Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills basketball team will head into the new season with a number-five national ranking. The Warriors are coming off a 33-4 season and a seventh-place finish at the national tournament last year and return two of the top three scorers from that squad.
The preseason poll, released this week by the National Junior College Athletic Association, has the Warriors trailing only South Plains (Tex.) and Northwest Florida State, the two teams that played for the national title last year, as well as Howard (Tex.) and Chipola (Fla.).
Three teams that are on the Warriors’ regular season schedule are ranked in the preseason poll in either Division I or II. Conference foe Iowa Western CC is rated 20th in the DI poll; College of Southern Idaho, whom Indian Hills defeated in the national tourney in March, is 7th. The Warriors take a trip to Utah and Idaho next month, playing three games in five nights, and they’ll battle Southern Idaho in the final game of the trip on Nov. 24. CSI was 31-5 a year ago.
Kirkwood CC is the lone DII school the Warriors will play this year that is ranked in the preseason. The Eagles, who will provide the opposition for IHCC in the second game of the season in the Blackwell Tire Classic on Nov. 3, are 7th. Indian Hills will travel to Cedar Rapids for a rematch with Kirkwood on Dec. 4.
Indian Hills was rated 9th in the preseason last year and ended the season with the national tourney berth, the 9th in school history. They were ranked in the top ten all season long and made it to the top of the ratings for one week in January after starting the season with 19 consecutive wins.
It’s the sixth time that IHCC has been in the top ten in the preseason rankings since the 2000-01 season.

Hoops Tickets On Sale Next Week
Ottumwa -- Season tickets for the 2012-13 basketball season at Indian Hills Community College go on sale next Tuesday, Sept. 4. And, again this year, anyone who purchases a season ticket during the month of September will get a reduced price on the season ticket package.
Tickets for the 17-game home schedule, which includes four tournaments, are $85 if purchased before October 1. After that, a season ticket will cost $102.
The tickets will be sold in the IHCC Athletic Office in the Hellyer Student Life Center on the Ottumwa campus from 7:15 to 4:45 Monday through Thursday.

Hoops Schedule Features Both New and Familiar Foes
OTTUMWA --- Two teams that joined Indian Hills in the NJCAA national tournament field last March, Three Rivers (Mo.) and College of Southern Idaho, and a new conference foe, Northeast (Neb.), are among the opponents on the Warriors’ 2012-13 basketball schedule.
“I think our schedule will be a great challenge for us and it fits our team very well,” said IHCC coach Barret Peery of the 30-game regular season slate that includes 17 home games.
The season will begin with back-to-back home tournaments, two of the four tourneys IHCC will host this year.
The season-opening tournament, the Blackwell Tire Classic, is Nov. 2-3 with the Warriors playing Carl Sandburg (Ill.) in the opener and Kirkwood the following night.
The next weekend Indian Hills will welcome Paris (Tex.) back to the Hellyer Center as part of the Reed Overhead Doors Classic. IHCC won a hard-fought game with Paris, 84-78, last year. Paris won the national title in 2005.
PCS and HyVee will also host two-day tournaments, both of them in December.
There will be two long three-game road trips. In November, the Warriors play at Salt Lake CC and then travel to a tourney hosted by Southern Idaho. Indian Hills defeated Southern Idaho in last year’s national tournament on the way to a seventh-place finish.
IHCC will play three games in Arizona in a five-day period, starting New Year’s Day. Those contests will be followed by a game at Three Rivers and one at Northeast (Neb.).
Peery said all the road games will be very challenging, especially the trip to Utah and Idaho and a pair of games in Missouri at Three Rivers and Moberly. He notes that will be a great way to prepare his team for the rugged conference schedule which now consists of eight games. Two of them will be played on Wednesdays, including the home encounter with Southeastern.
Indian Hills returns two of its top three scorers, Jameel McKay and Dustin Hogue, and other important parts from a team that finished 33-4 last year and earned the school’s ninth national tourney appearance.
“With so many returning players, I’m excited to challenge them with some great home games here at the Hellyer Center,” said the IHCC head coach.

Former Warrior Michael Haynes Killed
Ottumwa -- Michael Haynes, a key contributor on last year's Indian Hills national tournament basketball team, was killed Thursday in a shooting in his hometown of Chicago.
According to news reports, Haynes was shot when he tried to break up a fight between neighborhood friends over a necklace. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The 22-year old Haynes had signed a letter-of-intent with Iona College in New York and reportedly was set to move there next week.
"We're shocked and deeply saddened by this news," said Indian Hills coach Barret Peery, who had recruited Haynes to be a part of his first team at IHCC prior to the 2011-12 season. "Michael was such a great kid and great member of our team," Peery said. "He was a popular guy who absolutely loved being a part of this family."
Haynes averaged 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds in his only season with Indian Hills. He played in 31 games and started 11. The 6-foot-7-inch power forward came to Indian Hills after attending the University of Texas-El Paso.
"Michael had a bright future," Peery added. "He had done everything to give himself the opportunity to continue his education and career. It's a sad end to the story."

Mickeal to Return to IHCC
Ottumwa -- Former Indian Hills Community College basketball All-American and Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Pete Mickeal will be honored at a special event on the IHCC campus on Friday, July 27.
Mickeal was a member of the first-ever Hall of Fame class at Indian Hills, but was unable to attend the induction ceremony last February. He had a good excuse, though. He was busy playing in his third season with FC Barcelona in Spain.
The Rock Island, Ill. native will return to the Midwest this month and will come to Ottumwa to receive his Hall of Fame award. The special induction ceremony will take place in Warrior Junction in the Advanced Technology Center on the IHCC Ottumwa campus. The event will run from 4 – 6 p.m. Mickeal will be presented his Hall of Fame crystal and there will be an opportunity to visit with the former IHCC star.
Mickeal was a first-team All-American for the Warriors in 1998, a year in which he was also named the national Player of the Year and the MVP at the national tournament. He is the second-leading scorer in school history.
After playing on back-to-back national championship teams at Indian Hills, Mickeal went to the University of Cincinnati where he was a first-team all-conference choice both years he played for the Bearcats.
Mickeal recently finished his third season with FC Barcelona, helping them to a spot in the Euroleague Final Four and a third-place finish in the tourney. In his initial season in Spain in 2009-10, Mickeal’s FC Barcelona team won the Euroleague title as well as the Spanish League crown.
A knee injury cut short Mickeal’s 2010-11 season, but he came back strong this past season when FC Barcelona had the most wins in the Euroleague and the Spanish League.
Mickeal has had a long and distinguished professional basketball career, playing in five different foreign countries following a stint in the American Basketball Association.
